Karina Lorenzana
Vice President, ideas42

Karina shares the book that inspired her to pursue a career in global health, as well as her favorite parts of her job and how ideas42 confronts some of the challenges we all face in international development work .

"What is my favorite part of my job? This is probably the easiest question to answer - going out and doing field work, going into the communities that we're seeking to serve and holding a space to listen to women of reproductive age, mothers, community health workers, and giving them an opportunity to tell us their stories and share their perspectives."

FEATURED RESOURCES & ANNOUNCEMENTS FROM IDEAS42:
New Reports, Studies, Guides & Tools

Duke Global Health Institute Evidence Lab
The Evidence Lab developed a series of tools to help social enterprises in healthcare evaluate their services, products and/or technologies. The toolkit outlines different ways social enterprises in health can better evaluate their work and communicate their results with tighter timelines and more limited resources. Donors and funders may also use the toolkit with their grantees, or to better understand what types of information are reasonable to request from social enterprises in health.

Cholera Fact Sheet (now in Arabic)
Hesperian Health Guides
Hesperian has just released an Arabic translation of its Cholera Fact Sheet. If you are working in Yemen, download and share this free, easy-to-follow, and highly illustrated resource explaining how to prevent and treat cholera. Also available in English, Spanish, French, Haitian Kreyol and Portuguese for those responding to cholera outbreaks in South Sudan and elsewhere.

International Rescue Committee, Women's Refugee Commission, CARE, Save the Children
On behalf of the Inter-agency Working Group for Reproductive Health in Crises (IAWG), the International Rescue Committee, in partnership with Care, Save the Children and the Women's Refugee Commission, released a report on the impact of family planning in emergencies. The report includes collaborative solutions and actions to be taken by countries, implementing agencies, and donors at the Family Planning Summit and beyond.

Concern Worldwide
This booklet has short, practical articles on topics like social enterprise for maternal newborn health, using mobile technology to support (and delight) community health nurses, and a health hotline service that has been so successful it's expanding to the entire country. You'll also find cost-effectiveness data, secrets of human-centered design, and robust, honest evaluations of community maternal, newborn and child health programs.

JSI/SPRING Project
Between 2012-2017, USAID's SPRING project implemented an innovative, scalable, and sustainable community-based, multi-channel, integrated nutrition program in Bangladesh, establishing nearly 6,500 Farmer Nutrition Schools (FNS). Using a curriculum that draws on the ENA/EHA curriculum, SPRING reached more than 125,000 pregnant and lactating women and their children with nutrition-specific and nutrition-sensitive programming. Access an advocacy guide with recommendations for replication, along with training modules and materials (the project final report is also available under Publications).

Malaria Consortium
This advocacy report demonstrates that community-based primary healthcare has strong potential for being the mechanism through which the Global Goal on health can be achieved - extending health services to the most vulnerable in remote communities and making universal health coverage a reality.

JSI/Advancing Partners & Communities
The updated Community Health Systems (CHS) Catalog provides recent information on country community health systems. The CHS Catalog draws from policies and related documentation across the 25 countries deemed priority by USAID's Office of Population and Reproductive Health.

Catholic Relief Services
Station Days is a child and parent-friendly and participatory day-long monitoring and evaluation field activity to assist project staff, orphans and vulnerable children and their caregivers to appreciate critical issues affecting the children's lives and to understand the impact of the project. This simple guide helps explain how to organize and monitor Wellbeing Days to achieve optimum participation from children, their caregivers, and service providers while increasing coverage and access to services which will fulfill the rights of the child and family.

Food for the Hungry/The TOPS Program, CARE
The Technical and Operational Performance Support (TOPS) Program and CARE USA are pleased to offer this set of field-friendly activities. The aim of these lessons is to build awareness, facilitate critical reflective dialogue, and explore potential action to improve gender equity and diversity among development staff and community members and to identify gender equity and diversity linkages within social and behavior change interventions to increase their effectiveness.

CARE
In 2012, CARE committed to being part of the global movement to reach an additional 120 million women and girls with family planning information and services by 2020. The Path to 2020 provides a snapshot of the progress CARE has made since committing to the global family planning movement in 2012. The report also shares the key actions we are calling governments, donors and other civil society actors to mobilize around, in order to catalyze progress and re-ignite the commitment to reaching 120 million women and girls by 2020.

Save the Children
This report examines e ight life events that signal the end of childhood, and t he harsh realities faced by the most vulnerable, excluded children - including girls, refugees, street children, and children with disabilities.

ChildFund International, Save the Children, World Vision
For the first time, a review of official development assistance (ODA) to end violence against children has been done. The report found that in 2015, total ODA spending was $174 billion and of that, less than 0.6 percent was allocated to ending violence against children. This amounts to less than $0.65 per child in aid-receiving countries to end this scourge that affects more than one billion children every year.

GOAL
This is a comprehensive guide for the implementation of NIPP circles, including information on the rationale behind the development of the approach, target groups, targeting of area of intervention, formative research, human resources requirements for monitoring, evaluation, accountability and learning and reporting.
