October 2019 News
Dear Florida EM residents,

Welcome to the first EMRAF newsletter. My name is Matthew Beattie and I’m a third-year resident at USF. It was my honor to be elected as President of the Florida chapter of EMRA this year at Symposium by the Sea. The EM resident community in Florida is growing and we now have 18 programs. There are many opportunities for you to get involved!
1. What is EMRAF?

The Emergency Medicine Residents’ Association of Florida (EMRAF) is the representative voice of emergency medicine residents in Florida. EMRAF works closely with and under the leadership of the Florida College of Emergency Physicians (FCEP), a state chapter of ACEP. EMRAF has a full voting seat on the FCEP Board of Directors, and the EMRAF President attends all meetings. (Board meetings are open to all—feel free to attend!)

2. How is EMRAF working for you?

EMRAF is designed to develop well-rounded EM residents by:

  • Keeping you informed of critical issues in organized emergency medicine
  • Providing leadership opportunities within EMRA and FCEP
  • Facilitating opportunities for networking and mentoring
  • Assisting in the planning of FCEP events, such as Symposium by the Sea, Emergency Medicine Days and Life After Residency

3. What's new this year in EMRAF?

We are sending out monthly updates to inform you of leadership opportunities, educational activities, events and scholarships. We are also developing an EMRAF board made up of regional representatives to better serve you. We would like to eventually develop committees in areas such as EMS, pediatrics, ultrasound, education, etc.

We are looking for active members and participation, so if you have an idea, please contact me and I can help.

Leadership Opportunities
The following opportunities are excellent ways to get involved, make a difference and further your career by interacting with the most influential leaders and emergency physicians in Florida. They also look great on your CV! You may even meet your future employer one day, as many are active leaders in their EM groups.
EMRAF Board Regional Representatives
As an EMRAF board member, you'll help lead the organization while serving as a representative and advocate for residents in your region. You'll be expected to attend EMRAF's quarterly meetings either in person or via conference call.

We have split Florida into four regions below:
Please email Mbeattie221@gmail.com if interested and expect information soon on how to apply.
EM Days Planning Committee Resident Representative
Do you have an interest in health policy, or would you like to learn more about advocating for your profession and your patients? FCEP is looking for a resident representative to assist in planning Emergency Medicine Days (EM Days), which takes place in Tallahassee on Jan 27-29. It looks great on your CV and is a valuable experience!

You will be expected to attend EM Days 2020. If interested, please email Mbeattie221@gmail.com.
Symposium by the Sea Planning Committee Representative
Want to be more involved with FCEP's annual meeting and conference, Symposium by the Sea? Join the SBS Planning Committee as a Resident Representative! The rep is expected to help select speakers for 2020, distribute conference details to fellow residents, and occasionally contact speakers regarding their presentations.

You will be expected to attend monthly conference calls and be available to assist on-site at Symposium by the Sea (August 6-9, 2020 in Clearwater Beach). If interested, please email Mbeattie221@gmail.com.
Grant Opportunity
There is funding allotted every year through ACEP and EMRA for state chapters to work on a project that improves healthcare in Florida. This could be something related to public education on a specific topic, improving access to care, etc. If you have an idea that your passionate about and are interested in pursuing a grant, please email Mbeattie221@gmail.com.
Human Trafficking Initiative
Florida physicians are now required to complete one hour of CME on human trafficking. The Emergency Medicine Learning and Resource Center (EMLRC) is looking for an FCEP member to assist in helping with human trafficking education. The EMLRC will be hosting live courses around the state, so there is ample opportunity for involvement. If this is something you are passionate about, please email Mbeattie221@gmail.com.

Your Grand Rounds

FCEP would like to send a regional leader to your program to discuss the current state of affairs of emergency medicine in Florida. It is a great primer leading up to EM Days. This typically takes place at your grand rounds.

If you are a chief resident in charge of planning your weekly grand rounds, please email me a couple dates that would be available at Mbeattie221@gmail.com .

31st Annual Emergency Medicine Days
January 27-29, 2020
Hotel Duval in Tallahassee, FL
Free for residents & med students!

This is the premier advocacy event for emergency medicine in Florida and one of the most valuable events you can attend as a resident. It is important to be aware of policy issues that could affect the way you work, how your patients are cared for, your happiness and your income.

Day 1 includes an introductory primer to fill you in on the important topics, followed by 'workshop sessions' with physicians from your region to practice talking to legislators. The EMRAF meeting and reception, along with the medical student meeting, will be held on Day 2. Meetings with legislators can happen at any time, but FCEP will be scheduling most of them on Day 2.

It would be awesome to have a huge resident and medical student turnout. Don’t be intimidated; plan on coming and ask your program to send a group!
