Grant Spotlight: Operation Cinderella

Operation Cinderella Dress Event: $1,500
|
|
Operation Cinderella received a grant from the 2018 Girls' Grantmaking Project for the Fox Valley dress event that was held on March 30, 2019. Low-income and underserved students received everything they needed to attend prom for free including a dress, shoes, hand bag, jewelry, hair and makeup services, food and a goodie bag!
The program is open to any high school girl who can attend their school prom. Girls are referred to Operation Cinderella from 26 local schools and works in partnership with the Community Clothes Closet and the Boys and Girls Club - a reflection of a community coming together to encourage and uplift young women. Operation Cinderella can't fix the financial situations of each student, but it can fix one day.
For many families, the expense of outfitting a girls’ prom experience is a financial burden or simply not an option; add to that the reality that many girls today struggle with anxiety and self-esteem issues. Enter Operation Cinderella, which prepares an entire year for two dress events every spring. From previous participant surveys, Operation Cinderella knows it has served young girls experiencing homelessness or who are living on their own; some come from families of divorce, abuse or other health emergencies, often times making them feel unworthy of an experience like prom. We often hear that many have never felt pretty before that day, or told they were beautiful before. The day is so impactful that many come back after graduation to be fairy godmothers themselves!

Hannah attended the Operation Cinderella event with her grandmother in 2018. Her dad was disabled; mom was very sick and healthcare costs had bankrupted their family. A senior in high school, Hannah helped to care for both her parents and worked after school to help pay the bills. Operation Cinderella was one day where there were no worries, responsibilities or anxieties—people were there to take care of her!
