10-15-19 Meeting

President Lindsey called the meeting to order. Total attendance: 20, members 15 and 5 guests, speaker Kris Volpone, Barb Segel brought Joanne Johnson.  Karen Hurst invited Mary Pelo, staff member from LARC and Aktion Club agency advisory. We also had 2 prospective members; Clyde and Marilyn Alexander.

50/50-Charlie Dodson had the winning ticket today. We are collecting candy for trunk or treat at the end of the month. 

Candy: Bring in a bag of candy to a meeting by October 29th for Trunk or Treat.  Publix has BOGO! 

Ribbon cutting ceremony and grand opening of The Movement Room at Heights Elementary School was the 16th. Photos and comments coming soon. It was Epic!

5th Tuesday Social- The next date is October 29th. We're doing a service social at United Way, 5:30pm-7:30pm. We'll be  having pizza and making some fleece blankets for Children's Network of SWFL. Sign up at a meeting or send Lindsey an email. 

Interclub: First one is scheduled for November 6th at 12:00pm. Meeting is with the Fort Myers Club. They meet in the AAA building on Colonial.

Oasis Reading/Mentoring (Stewart Ross) weekly at Orangewood  Elementary on Wednesdays  9:30am-10:10am. Please let Stewart know if you can help. Four volunteers are needed each week. Come make a difference! 

Atlas Delivery Volunteers needed. Soon we will begin delivering atlases to children in 4 elementary schools that we sponsor. We'll need a couple of members to come and help hand them out at each one. It's a short duration event but you just have to see the smiles on faces of the kids!  What to do: sign up to attend, wear your club name tag and a Kiwanis shirt if you have one.  You'll need to bring a photo ID when you sign in at the office. 

Littleton has confirmed their date and time for Thursday October 31st at 9:15am. If you can help, see Kim.

Kiwanis One Day  is October 26th-We'll be putting labels in the Atlas books at United Way back building. Barbara Hartman will be leading the project. 

Start time is 10:00am. Consider participating in one of the four Hands-Only CPR presentations also at United Way on Saturday. 9am/10am/11am/12pm. Free! 






Trunk or Treat is Oct 31st at Hunter Park (can be seen off Summerlin in the Pine Manor Community). We'll decorate a car and hand out candy as well as other items we have on hand. This event is for local families in the neighborhood to participate in a safe Halloween event. Bring in your candy to a meeting by October 29th. We'll be gathering at 4pm. Let Kim know if you can help. 

MS Support Group(Bill Grant), meets 3rd Thursday of each month at St. Hilary Episcopal Church. Please consider attending a meeting and learn about this project so we'll have more 
back up volunteers. The next event is Oct 17th. 

Literacy Buddy  Calling all "buddies." You will be paired with a child (age 4-5). Three times a year you will get a letter from your child and a few notes from his/her teacher describing the type of book they would like to have. You purchase the book and it goes to your child.   Start by signing up:   https://elcofswfl.org/index.php/elc-literacy-buddy-program/     In the section where it says preferred school write in Metro-McGregor Kiwanis Club. 

November 9th-Rescue Runway. We'll have a booth at an event for Children's Advocacy Center that will be held at Bell Tower. Aktion Club will be selling some of the dog toys they are making and dog treats from the LaBelle Club.

Aktion Club-(Karen Hurst) at LARC. Meets 2nd Tuesday at 8:30am, year-round. They are collecting bottle caps as well. Bring in clean/used T-shirts for Karen to take as they are making more dog toys.

Our speaker today was Kris Volpone. Kris told us about the many programs they operate such as sheltering, food assistance, meals with compassion, clothing vouchers, and healthcare services. At the holidays they provide families with Christmas assistance. 
There are many ways you can help; volunteer, donate clothes to one of the thrift stores, serve a meal or ring the bell at Christmas time. They have a rapid rehousing as well as transitional housing. They also have a substance abuse recovery program and trained personnel to assist when disaster strikes.
