1000 Books Before Kindergarten Now Available Region Wide!

1000 Books Before Kindergarten is a reading program designed to help caregivers prepare children for success in kindergarten. Children get ready to read years before they begin formal education. The most effective way to help children be ready is to read to them. Reading together:
  • Is a great bonding experience
  • Builds vocabulary
  • Instills a love of reading
  • Familiarizes a child with story structures & books in general
  • Teaches children the value and fun in reading!
Every child from birth to the day they start kindergarten can participate. To get started on your journey to 1,000 books, stop by any East Central Regional Library location and pick up your first counting sheet at the desk! Then just keep track of books read to the child. You can count any book the child hears, no matter who the reader is or where the reading takes place. Regardless of how a book is presented, count it toward your goal. You can also count a child's favorite book each and every time you read it!  For every 100 books read, stop back at the library for your reward and next log.

1,000 books seems like a LOT, but you would be surprised to learn that completion is well within your reach. Starting at birth, it's only 1 book a day or 4 books a week. Even if you don't start until age 4, it's only 3 books a day or 20 books a week.

This project was funded in part by the Initiative Foundation, a regional community foundation.

The 3rd Annual ECRL Reads continues! For the full schedule check out the ECRL Events Calendar .

F eatured Book:

"You don't see novels like this one very often.  Peace Like a River  reminds a reader of Kent Haruf's  Plainsong  or even Norman MacLean's  A River Runs Through It . It's got that pure American loss of innocence theme, that belief in and fascination with miracles, that insistence on the goodness of men outside of the law." -Susan Salter Reynolds,  Los Angeles Times Book Review" --provided by publisher
