World stories edition

This week we aim to take you virtually around the world, introduce you to new online resources in our eLibrary and inspire you stay creative, and always learning. We are also looking back on a past local studies community project with stories from around the world. While our libraries remain closed, we are excited to have moved our regular 3D print club at The Learning Space online and invite you to our new online book club starting next week on our Facebook!

We would like to invite you to join us for our online book club! Starting 6 May, join us on our Facebook every Wednesday at 6pm to discuss what books you are reading and get some suggestions about what books to read next. A Facebook post will go up ten minutes prior to the meet-up on our page where you can add comments and chat online. Everyone is welcome!



In response to COVID-19, the following resources have been added to our eLibrary for members to enjoy access until 30 June. Click through the new additions below. All you need is your library card number!

Access Video On Demand - content from around the world: from Oscar, Emmy, and Peabody award-winning documentaries, to how-to programs that make life easier and richer, top-quality performances spanning the arts, biographies of history-makers past and present, and more.

Just for the Kids Streaming Collection - educational videos children want to watch. It is a thoroughly kid-safe, advertisement-free media platform kids can freely explore and enjoy.

The World Almanac for Kids Online - provides resources for homework, reports, and projects in a fun format while encouraging online research skills from a trusted source.

World Geography & Culture Online - study countries, states, places, peoples, and geography concepts and skills through a global approach.

Health Reference Centre - comprehensive, in-depth coverage of body systems, current health issues, major diseases and conditions, treatments, and procedures, as well as health and nutrition information specific to men, women, children, teens, and seniors.

The Learning Space

While our regular meet-ups are temporarily suspended, we're keen to continue sharing our knowledge - so we've moved online!

The Learning Space team will provide regular content on 3D printing and modelling, suitable for beginners and pros alike. This will include a mix of live sessions, curated content and in-house tutorials. We're all about supporting our community of makers, tinkerers, thinkers and creators - so if you have a question please drop us a line on our new page.

The State Library has launched a new collecting drive to capture how people in NSW are living their new normal during this unprecedented moment in our history, so that we can all help tell this story to future generations.

To get involved simply take a photo of your life right now - how you work, learn, eat, stay fit, keep informed and stay entertained - and post it to Instagram or Twitter with #NSWatHome. Your photos with the hashtag #NSWatHome will be displayed on the State Library's website and collected by the Library.

Tour famous sites and landmarks such as the Great Pyramid of Giza, Colosseum, Taj Mahal, Sydney Opera House, Hollywood Boulevard and much more.

The Australian Reptile Park is providing educational (and fun!) videos for school kids. Zookeepers will be live-streaming daily as they showcase their favourite animals and answer viewer questions. These videos are streamed LIVE on the Australian Reptile Park Facebook and Instagram at 2pm daily so make sure you follow and tune in!

Meshmixer is a fantastic free software for creating and manipulating 3D files for 3D printing. How to explore the world without leaving home

We've all had to put our travel plans on hold, so why not enjoy the world of virtual travel? Visit the pyramids of Egypt, go on a canoe ride down the Amazon, or drop from a helicopter onto the highest peaks in the Alps. The possibilities are endless!
