First Friday R2 Gallery Opening Reception
Friday, May 3 from 6-8pm with patron/member preview at 5:30pm

Carbondale Arts presents the Opening reception of ''Linear // Planar'' by Savanna LaBauve and Stephanie Seguin and 'Yellow for Frances' by Eden Keil at the R2 Gallery at The Launchpad in Carbondale. Linear // Planar, features new works from Savanna LaBauve and Stephanie Seguin who are both in their second and final year of Artist in Residency at Carbondale Clay Center.

Having used the prompt Paper Clay: Two artists. Two materials. Two perspectives, each artist responded to their materials, investigative processes, and the search for the point at which forms would melt into the page and where patterns became physical form.

Yellow for Frances by Eden Keil is a series of large scale paintings continuing an exploration of the landscape through an abstracted and personal lens.

All-levels Dance Workshop with Summation Dance
Saturday, May 11, 10-11:45am

Dance Initiative's spring 2019 Artist in Residence, Summation Dance, will be offering a very unique dance workshop for all interested movers. In this all-levels workshop, Summation Dance invites the community members to be active participants in their work in progress: Project Highway Habitus.

Motivated by themes of contact, and utilizing exercises developed during our travels, we will dive into our own habitus through guided improvisation, movement generation, and phrase work accessible to all levels. We will be exploring kinetic responses, making new connections, and investigating how our tendencies inform who we are and how we move through the world.

Studio Performance of Work-In-Progress by Summation Dance
Saturday, May 11, 7:30pm
$15

Concluding their week-long residency, Summation Dance performs their work-in-progress in the intimate setting of the open studio at The Launchpad.

Sumi Clements and Taryn Vander Hoop of Summation Dance Company launched their most recent choreographic venture, Project Highway Habitus, in fall of 2017. This multi-phased and multi-faceted project began with a cross-country exploration aimed at researching how geography shapes ideology-both political and cultural. The research is being conducted through the lens of habitus-a sociological system aimed at understanding why individuals perceive the world as they do, and how this, in turn, informs their behaviors and participation within society. It was loosely inspired by, and developed in tandem with, the election cycle, and investigates not only what divides the country, but also what unites it.

Framework: A Contemporary Technique Practice
Sunday, May 19, 10-11:45am

Framework, an evolving practice developed by Helanius J. Wilkins, is a rigorous practice that transforms technique class into a laboratory for examining, exploring, and discovering bodily movements in real time. Framework, as a movement technique, is a viscerally charged ongoing practice, resembling a ritual that employs recovery through activity. Specific design, time, and effort modules are built resulting in choreographic phrases and expressions. By assembling structures for students to inhabit, the ultimate goal of Framework is to question communication, refine technical ability and artistry, and interrogate one's interior material. When fully committed to the rigors of the work, sensory engagement can be triggered bringing these architectural spaces to life.

Kids & Teens Jazz (ages 8+)
with Crystal River Ballet
Saturdays, 9:30-10:30am

Contemporary Jazz is a style of dance adapted to the popular music of today.  Students learn to move energetically, in an age appropriate and wholesome way.  The study of contemporary dance gives students skills in another style of dance that will increase the dancer's range of choreographic proficiency.  Because the terminology used is based on classical ballet, it is preferable for students to have a working foundation in ballet, but is not required until the intermediate level.  Ages 8 and up, teens and adults welcome; ALL levels class.
