Principal Points from Sheryl Hough

I hope this newsletter finds your families healthy, happy and eager to get outdoors as the weather gradually improves and warms up this spring. We really miss the human contact with your children as well as their parents! West is usually filled with enthusiasm and laughter. T his distance learning adventure is challenging so we were thrilled to be able to access google meets, allowing our teachers to interact more with their students and giving kids the opportunity to visit their classmates.

Survey Results on Time Spent on School Work
Thank you to those who completed the district survey on distance learning. Overall, our feedback was positive. We did receive parent feedback regarding the amount of time that their children are spending on school work. The majority of our parents felt that the amount of time was just right, while the percentage of parents who felt the time spent was too much or too little was about the same. As we have supported teachers in best practices in distance learning, we have referenced The National Board of Teaching Standards who recommends 2-3 hours/day for middle school learners in a distance learning environment. We know that each student is different and one child may take 20 minutes to do what another child spends 50 minutes completing each day. To more effectively personalize the workload for students, we are adding WIN time on Friday mornings in May, during which students can get extra support if they are struggling or opportunities for extension and enrichment to keep growing.

Change in Calendar and Schedule
Last week, you received a letter from the Superintendent sharing some information about grading and calendar changes. In this Star Tracker, there are sections below with that information again. Please make sure you reference that info and let us know if you have questions. One of those changes is May 8, 15, 22, 29 will be WIN opportunities from 9:00am - 11:00am. Teacher planning time starts at 11:00. WIN time will look slightly different for students during Distance Learning. These are the goals we have set out for WIN time:
  1. Supporting students who have struggled to complete a task.
  2. Offering feedback to students based on work they have submitted.
  3. Re-teaching or clarifying information for students who have misconceptions.
  4. Reaching out and connecting to students who have become disengaged.
  5. Offering enrichment and extension activities for students who are ready for more.
Teachers are creating WIN offerings for students that they can access at any time throughout the week. This LINK will bring students to a slide presentation that will be added to during teachers planning days on May 1st and 4th. Each slide will consist of a different activity that your child can participate in during that WIN time if they are not receiving support from a classroom teacher or during other times throughout the week if they have finished their work and are looking for an enrichment activity.

Grading during Distance Learning
Now that we know we will complete our school year learning from a distance, the district put a lot of thought and effort into creating a grading option that best meets the needs of our students. Our focus is on teaching essential learning only and supporting each child through this process. Please see the link below to access our district grading policy during distance learning and please contact us if you have any questions.  District posting about grading

Again, thank you for your support during distance learning and please continue to contact us if you have questions, compliments or concerns.  We appreciate your feedback!

Secondary parent message:
As the year winds down, we are interested in information from our families on their experience during this current school year, prior to distance learning. If you have multiple students feel free to complete a survey for each child (elementary and secondary surveys are slightly different and will be sent by your child's principal). We will also be asking students to complete a similar spring school survey if they so choose. Students in grades 6-12 will be sent the voluntary survey link next week. Below is the link to the student survey for your preview.

Message from the Superintendent
Governor Walz extended school closures through the end of the school year. Please click on this LINK for information on how that decision impacts our own district and students.

Neighborhood Forest has Donated Trees for CMSW Students
In honor of last week's Earth Day, Neighborhood Forest has donated 20 white spruce seedlings for students who would like to plant a tree for part of their service learning project or for any student who could use a tree in their yard or wants to plant one for a family member, friend or neighbor. We only ordered 20 because of distance learning.  Neighborhood Forest has been donating trees to schools around the country, along with environmental educational activities for many years. A special thank you to parent Judy Wright who was able to secure this donation for us. If your child is interested in planting a tree, by Monday, May 4th please send at H [email protected].  I have the trees at school and can meet you here to pick one up.

Teacher Appreciation Week
May 4 - 8 is Teacher Appreciation Week.
Students will receive an email encouraging them to come up with creative ways to let teachers know they are appreciated. It will include some suggestions to help get their creative juices flowing. Parents/guardians should feel free to email teachers too.

23 Student Winners in NHD/Regionals
Sixteen 8th graders became State Qualifiers in six separate categories during the National History Day - Regional competition back in early March. Additionally, s even students earned Honorable Mention in four separate categories.

It was a particularly difficult year as the regular competition was cancelled due to Covid-19, so all categories had to be submitted via videos and links. The state competition on May 2nd will be virtual - creating unique challenges for all.

There were both Individual and Group categories for Documentary, Exhibit, Performance, and Website. Click here for more details.

6th Grade Spanish Immersion

During a Google Meet session focusing on utilizing the "imperative" form of verbs, Mrs. Castagnetto did a live cooking demonstration. Students were invited to make the Guacamole along with her or try it themselves later. Their assignment was then to create their own step-by-step recipe in Spanish using "imperative" verbs.
