Nearly 100 classes were offered at the 2019 EduCode conference. 
 
EDUCODE 2019 AN OUTSTANDING SUCCESS   
 
SN-ICC thanks and salutes all those involved in the success of this year's EduCode educational conference and exposition March 11-15 at the Orleans Hotel & Casino Conference Center.   
 
A record 1,460-plus industry professionals attended the nearly 100 classes, ranging from sessions on building and fire codes to leadership strategies. Many attendees sat for the testing to achieve certification in various areas of the codes.
 
Also, more than 20 vendors in the expo area offered information and demonstrations about their products and services.

Chapter members and their guests were all smiles at the Chapter-hosted Vegas Golden Knights game on March 3 at T-Mobile Arena. 
    
MEMBERS ENJOY GOLDEN KNIGHTS GAME
 
Some 120 Chapter members and their guests turned out in Vegas Golden Knights gear for the hockey game on March 3 at T-Mobile Arena. The Knights were victorious over the Vancouver Canucks. SN-ICC subsidizes the ticket price for the members-only special events at the Vegas Golden Knights games.
 
The Membership Committee is already securing tickets for members-only VGK games in the fall and next spring. Please watch your e-mail Inbox for additional information about the SN-ICC gathering at a VGK game in the fall.

BOARD APPOINTS 2019 ETHICS COMMITTEE
 
The Chapter's board of directors has appointed the members of the 2019 Ethics Committee.  
 
The members are Building Official Emeritus Robert Weber, retired from Clark County; Building Official Emeritus Ron Lynn, retired from Clark County; former Henderson Building Official Mo Jadid, who now works for Bureau Veritas; and former SN-ICC board member Bill Laub, retired from Southwest Gas Corp. The committee members named Weber chairperson and Lynn co-chairperson.  
 
The Ethics Committee reviews the Chapter's Code of Ethics and may recommend changes. The Chapter's eligible voting members are asked to approve the recommended changes. The committee also conducts the Chapter's annual ethics meeting, which is scheduled for August 8 at Sierra Gold.

MASS LUMBER CONSTRUCTION DISCUSSED
 
Nearly 100 members turned out for the Chapter Meeing on February 14 to hear a presentation by Rebecca Holt, LEED AP BD+C, ND, senior sustainable building advisor, associate director, Sustainable Communities Lab, Perkins + Will in San Francisco, about mass timber construction
 
Holt provided several sources of information about her presentation, which are posted on the Chapter's website.

UNLV LAUDS SN-ICC GENEROSITY
 
UNLV President Marta Meana, Ph.D.recently notified the Chapter that the university has welcomed the Chapter into the UNLV Foundation Benefactor Society - a group of 600 university benefactors who have contributed $50,000 to $99,999 to the university.

"I cannot thank you enough for the very real and significant impact that you have made on the University of Nevada, Las Vegas," Meana wrote in a letter to the Chapter. "I am honored to thank you on behalf of the entire UNLV community. Your generosity inspires and energizes us all."

The Chapter has contributed to several important UNLV efforts, including a seismic activity study, the Solar Decathlon home project, and the Engineering College's new STEM mobile lab.

CHAPTER SETS UP CODE CAREER PAGE
 
Given concerns about the significant labor shortage in the building industry, the Chapter recently established a Careers in Codes page on the Chaper's website.

The page contains information and resources about the code profession.

CHAPTER PREPARES FOR ICC CONFERENCE
 
SN-ICC is pleased to serve as the host chapter for the International Code Council's annual conference, expo and code hearings in October at the Rio Hotel & Casino Conference Center.

The ICC Annual Conference (Annual Business Meeting) and the Building Safety & Design Expo are scheduled for October 20-23; the Public Comment Code Hearings are set for October 23-30.

"We encourage our members to plan to attend this important code gathering coming to our community," said SN-ICC President Terry Kozlowski of the City of North Las Vegas. "This is a great opportunity for our members and we hope they'll take advance of it by attending as much of the conference, expo and code hearings as possible."

The Chapter's 2019 ABM Committee, chaired by Immediate Past President Sam Palmer of Clark County, is hard at work on several aspects of the conference - including the "Welcome Party" the evening of Sunday, October 20 at the Brooklyn Bowl at the Linq on the Strip. The Chapter will operate the "Welcome Booth" at the conference and is working closely with ICC organizers on the Bob Fowler Motorcycle Ride, community tours and the companion program.

MEMBER NEWS 

The Southern Nevada Chapter of the International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials presented
Bill Laub with a "Chapter Lifetime Achievement Award" in recognition of his many years of outstanding service to the chapter. Laub received the award at the chapter's Installation Banquet in January at the Palace Station Hotel & Casino. Congratulations, Bill, on this well-deserved recognition!

INDUSTRY NEWS

The City of Las Vegas Department of Building & Safety recently announced changes to the plan submittal requirement for special inspection plans. The city will no longer require a third set of plans for projects with special inspections. The owner or contractor will be responsible to provide any additional copies of construction plans to the third party special inspection agency. The City of Henderson Department of Utility Services is updating the CAD file submittal process.  Beginning April 1, CAD files need to be uploaded to the city's online portal, as outlined on the attached information sheet.  A workshop is scheduled for March 27 at the Henderson Convention Center to provide training and answer questions regarding CAD file preparation and submittal. The College of Southern Nevada has re-launch its Construction Management - Building Inspection Certificate of Achievement Program.The initial course offering will include classes on the IBC, the IRC, the UPC and the UMC.
