Reduced Cost Ethics Training for Professional Engineers
To help our members meet their requirements, the New Jersey Society of Professional Engineers has launched a new online ethics training for professional engineers at a reduced cost.
This two-hour online video, presented by the NJSPE counsel Larry Powers, will provide you with the two credits required for the ethics portion of your professional engineer license. Once the video is viewed in its entirety, you will be e-mailed a certificate proving you have met this licensing requirement.

We Want to Help you Meet your PDH Requirements!
April 2020 is the next deadline for the biennial PE license renewal. In the State of New Jersey, 24 professional development hours are required every two years, including two to eight of those hours completed in ethics. While completing the PDH requirements for the PE license can be a huge task if you wait until the last minute, there are ways to make the process a little easier.
To assist our members with the final push of credit completion, we have compiled some current and upcoming opportunities NJSPE will be offering that can earn you credits!

MATHCOUNTS
Each year, the NJSPE's Education Foundation sponsors the NJ MATHCOUNTS events
throughout the state. The Competition Series is for middle school students grades 6 - 8. It
consists of school competitions with the winners moving on to regional and then state
competitions. The national competition was held in Orlando in May.The MATHCOUNTS motto is "Some students love math. Other students fear math. MATHCOUNTS is a place for both." Building a bridge to the top
When the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey entered into a nearly $2 billion public-private effort to rebuild the Goethals Bridge - which carries about 1.5 million vehicles a month across the Arthur Kill between Staten Island and Elizabeth - the global design, engineering, construction and management firm AECOM was brought in for project and construction management.
AECOM is New Jersey's largest engineering company with more than 1,000 employees in the state, according to the 2019 NJBIZ Book of Lists. The replacement of the Goethals Bridge was named as New York's 2018 Best Project in the Highway and Bridges category by the trade publication Engineering News-Record.

World Green Building Council Calls for Net-Zero Embodied Carbon in Buildings by 2050

The World Green Building Council's latest maneuver in its war against greenhouse gas emissions is a rallying cry for embodied-carbon reduction in buildings that involves global collaboration, communication, education, innovation and regulation. WGBC's ambitious aim is to get to net-zero EC in all new construction and renovations by 2050.
"We need to rethink the way we make buildings," said Krista Mikkonen, Finland's Minister of the Environment and Climate Change, at the Sept. 25 launch, during Climate Week NYC 2019 in New York City, of a 67-page WGBC report, Bringing Embodied Carbon Upfront.

Proposed loan redemption program for new STEM teachers in NJ advances
As the focus on careers in science, technology, engineering and math continues to build, a bipartisan bill that would provide up to $20,000 in tuition reimbursement for new STEM teachers in New Jersey schools is advancing in the state Legislature.
If approved, the bill could provide opportunities in 12 schools throughout Atlantic County, said co-sponsor Sen. Chris Brown, R-Atlantic.

The first traffic circle to ever exist was right here in N.J. You're welcome, America.
If there are two distinctly Jersey road features that confound out-of-staters and even frustrate Jersey drivers, it's the jughandle and the traffic circle.
The traffic circle isn't as likely to get an angry eye roll from out-of-state drivers as the jughandle, only because they are fewer of them now. There are approximately 30 traffic circles in New Jersey, said Steven Schapiro, a state Department of Transportation spokesman.

NTSB Report and Recommendations
NTSB has released an abstract of its forthcoming final report on the fatal Merrimack Valley pipeline explosion from September of last year. Final revisions are being made to the report, but in the report's synopsis/executive summary, NTSB states that "requiring a licensed professional engineer to stamp plans would illustrate that the plans had been approved by an accredited professional with the requisite skills, knowledge, and experience to provide a comprehensive review." Acknowledging the importance of the role of the PE in preventing an event like this from occurring, NTSB recommends the elimination of the licensing exemption on natural gas pipeline projects in the 31 states that have the exemption in place.
