Hawes Highlights: Stay Informed!
This Week in Review
Hawes Elementary School is committed to all students succeeding in a rigorous core curriculum. We believe in the importance of a strong home and school connection to ensure that our students acquire the skills needed to be life-long learners. We believe in teamwork, collaboration and mutual respect. We embrace risk-taking, creativity and an openness to new ideas and technologies. We believe that a positive self-esteem and social responsibility are goals for all and that our students, through a love of learning, will be challenged to reach their highest potential! We believe in aiming for the remarkable!
It's is hard to believe that we are coming to the end of May and it is time to move back into our K/1 wing! A journey through construction is filled with many obstacles and often times, setbacks. Although we have faced some challenges, we are on time! This week we will begin the moving process with the movement of instructional materials and unpacking. On Tuesday, May 28, our students will start the day in their transformed rooms! We thank everyone for helping us in the next few weeks as we move, unpack and settle in! For now, check out how amazing our rooms look:

Statewide (CAASPP) testing for students in grade 5 - Continues this week!
Testing continues this week with all classes in grade 5 testing from 8:30 - 10:10 am each day. Our 5th graders will be taking the science test. Please remember that these tests are not timed and students have has much time as they need.

Additionally, we will be making up tests for students that were absent during the normal testing schedule. Make up tests will happen throughout the day as we juggle students and schedules.

Please make sure that your child eats a healthy breakfast, gets a good night of rest and is at school on time during testing time!

As in the past, volunteers can not be in the classrooms during the testing sessions.
Recently there have been measles outbreaks in several states. This just serves as a reminder about the importance of immunizations. As we begin to plan for the upcoming 2019/2020 school year, we wanted to let you know about recent changes in the law as it pertains to immunizations. Please read the May Newsletter from Nurse Kathi about the changes to immunization requirements. Summer is a good time to get our annual wellness check ups.
News from our district nurse!
School Site Council Parent Representatives
Our School Site Council is a 10 member committee of staff and parents who meet four (4) times a year to develop and approve our school plan, which is the plan that outlines our instructional focus areas. Per the by-laws, parent members are elected to serve a two-year term. For the 2019-2020 year, we have 3 vacant seats and are looking for parents who would be willing to have their name on a ballot. Our election will take place prior to the school year ending so that our committee is in place for September. For this position, there is no need to campaign – just be willing to serve and help us look reflectively at our student achievement data to better serve our students.

If you are interested or would like to know more, please email me at:  jjennings@hbcsd.us by Friday, May 24.

State Testing results - New Format!
As you are aware, our students in grades 3-5 are in the midst of taking the the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress.

Our students will take the following test(s), depending on their grade level:
  • Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments for English language arts/literacy (ELA) and mathematics in grades three through eight
  • California Science Test (CAST) in grades five and eight

We are pleased to share that Student Score Reports will now be accessed electronically through the parent portal on our student information system . Portal information will be provided at the conclusion of the district testing window. This report will show your child’s scores for ELA and mathematics. It includes an overall score for each subject and information about how well your child did in different areas. Students in grades four through eight who took the test in previous years will also see past scores so you can see your child’s progress over time.

Recently, the California Department of Education (CDE), in collaboration with the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium and Educational Testing Service, launched two new websites to help empower parents/guardians and families to become partners in their children’s academic success:

These family-focused websites provide resources to facilitate parents’/guardians’ understanding of the scores presented on their child’s Student Score Reports. Using these websites, families can become involved in their child’s educational progress and:

·         Learn more about the performance areas in each subject and grade.
·         See all sample test questions.
·         Prepare for parent-teacher conferences with a useful downloadable guide.
·         Access high-quality resources to support learning at home.

Note: If your child took the CAST for science, the results will be provided to you at a later time. (5th grade)
