March 5, 2020

An idea turned into a collaboration project, which became a fundraiser. Ms. Johnson's National Honors Society art 🎨class and Mr. Mitchell's SCORE construction 🔨 skills class came together 🤝on a project to make birdhouses🐦.

Ms. Johnson went to Mr. Mitchell with an idea to bring in his construction class's work and incorporate it with her art students' work.

The best part of this project, aside from students working together, was sharing these pieces of artwork with the community by auctioning them off for a Nixa Education Foundation charity event held at the Pythian Castle.

NJH Awarded $2000 Grant by NCF
Nixa Junior High was awarded a $2000 grant by the Nixa Community Foundation. This money was used to purchase over 300 books for teachers to help build their classroom libraries. A new reading program that was begun last fall requires students and teachers to stop and read for 20+ minutes each day during advisory. Classroom libraries are essential in helping this program to succeed.

Teachers enjoyed hot chocolate and sweets while choosing their books!

Post-film: panel and discussion following the film.

IndieFlix , a leading independent online streaming platform, along with its non-profit arm, the IndieFlix Foundation , is sparking a global conversation about anxiety through screenings of its brand-new documentary, “ Angst: Raising Awareness Around Anxiety ”. On March 10, Nixa Public Schools will hold a special screening of the documentary at Aldersgate United Methodist Church to open up a dialogue between local families, community leaders and experts. The event will feature a viewing of the 56-minute film, followed by an informative panel discussion.

Producers Scilla Andreen and Karin Gornick have one goal: to start a global conversation and raise awareness around anxiety. Through candid interviews, they utilize the power of film to tell the stories of many kids and teens who discuss their anxiety and its impacts on their lives and relationships, as well as how they’ve found solutions and hope. The film also includes a special interview with Michael Phelps, a mental health advocate and one of the greatest athletes of all-time. In addition, the documentary provides discussions with mental health experts about the causes of anxiety and its sociological effects, along with the help, resources and tools available to address the condition.
