THE REV. PAIGE HANKS
The Reverend Paige Alvarez Hanks is a priest in the Diocese of Southwest Florida, serving as an assisting priest at The Cathedral Church of St. Peter in St. Petersburg. She currently serves as the chair of the Diocesan Race and Reconciliation Committee and is a trainer for the Dismantling Racism Diocesan Training. JOIN OUR TEACHING SERIES:
WOMEN IN THE BIBLE
Facitiltated by the Reverand Paige Hanks every Thursday at 10:30 am, please join us in our Christian Education journey as we learn about Women in the Bible. There is much misinformation about the characters we will study, as well as how gender is understood in the ancient church that connects to how it plays out in today’s modern church. Through our time of study, we will encounter new revelation as we explore our own internal gender biases from our unique contexts. This course will meet each Thursday, beginning May 20 at 10:30am via Zoom.

MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH
May is mental health awareness month. Here are two books that can help shed light and offer personal insight and practical tools for supporting this important cause.

Building Resilience: When There's No Going Back to the Way Things Were

How do we develop the resilience that empowers us to be ourselves in the face of change? How do we learn to be courageous when days are difficult? How do we build our capacity for healing and growth when we can no longer do the things we once did that gave our lives satisfaction, meaning, and purpose?
Building Resilience offers a path toward creativity in responding to change in your life, regaining some control over your circumstances, and overcoming feelings of helplessness. Whether you're 17 or 75, if life has thrown you a curve ball, this book can help you get on track toward being yourself in your new normal. With a foreword by Stephanie Spellers.

With Sighs Too Deep for Words: Grace and Depression

A meditation and prayer companion for Christians who struggle with depressionThe stigma around mental illness in our culture has had a damaging effect on those who suffer from its grip. As a priest and bishop, Hirschfeld has quietly and secretly been in treatment for depression for decades but now shares his own experience publicly. In this book, he offers short meditations, prayers, and suggestions of how one can follow and call upon Jesus for strength and peace during times of emotional upheaval.

Christians often feel that their experience of depression or mental illness is a reflection of a deficit in their faith. As a result of seeing depression as a moral shortcoming or spiritual failure, we risk more damage to ourselves and even hurt those around us by denying what is really going on. This book, with its prayers and practical suggestions for spiritual and creative practices and resilience, can be a companion for those who suffer so that they may know more deeply the resilient love of Jesus.

Each volunteer shift is a 2-4 hour commitment for a minimum of one day per week. Experience in Retail, Customer Service, and/or Retail a plus, but not required.

Volunteers are invaluable to serving our community. Our goal is to reuse, repurpose and recycle goods — keeping as much as possible out of landfill — while providing our community with access to reasonably priced, quality merchandise.

Here are ways you can help:

* Customer Care helps shoppers to ensure a pleasant shopping experience.
* Merchandisers organize departments, restock the floor and display retail goods.
* Philanthropy distributes merchandise to organizations in need.
* Donation Intakers receive, sort and process donations.

Work-from-Home volunteers help prepare merchandise for sale. We are especially looking for help in these areas:
* Games: checking games to ensure all components are intact
* Stationery: packaging up cards and envelopes
* Holidays: preparing merchandise for Christmas, Halloween, Easter, Valentines, 4th of July, and more
* School, Office, Art Craft Supplies: organizing and packaging materials for reuse
* Toys: sorting, cleaning, and packaging toys
* Hardware: sorting and packaging tools, materials, electronics and appliances

Requirements?
*Team players with a genuine interest in serving the community and contributing to the reuse movement.
* Willingness to support COVID-19 safety measures set by Shared Blessings
* Physically able to lift 50 pounds (Merchandisers and Donation Intakers only)

Benefits?
Serving the community and our environment is rewarding work. We have a lot of fun! New merchandise is donated daily, so the element of surprise and wonder is constant. Get a first peek and more!
