Teachers! Distance Teaching?
Make Portuguese Count™ in the
Portuguese Classroom!

Teachers of Portuguese can take advantage of the 2020 U.S. Census already in full swing.
Use this "teachable moment" to engage your students with lessons in civic engagement, ethnic identity and Portuguese Pride in your own Portuguese classrooms.

Teachers at the "Encontro de Professores de Português" at Rhode Island College in October, 2019 adapted lessons from the U.S Census website "Statistics in Schools" to teach about the Census. The lessons were refined and translated into Portuguese by Dr. Silvia Oliveira and her interns at the Institute for Portuguese and Lusophone World Studies for grades K - 12.

The Census is in full swing but you can make an impact while students are at home.
Lessons can easily be accessed at the Digital Commons of the
James P. Adams Library, Rhode Island College.

NEWL PORTUGUESE EXAM - 2020

The 2020 National Examination s in World Languages (NEWL) for Arabic, Korean, Portuguese, and Russian have been postponed until May to allow NEWL staff to adapt the exams in response to the COVID-19 situation. American Councils is committed to providing high school students the opportunity to demonstrate their foreign language knowledge and skills this year and will announce final testing d   ates by April 10.

Due to the worldwide situation with COVID-19 and school closings, we are modifying the administration format in two ways. First, the examinations will be shortened in total length. Second, exams will move from school-based to home-based administration. Students sitting for the exam at home will be monitored online by American Councils, Washington, DC-based specialists.

Students already registered for the original April testing dates will not need to re-register. The last day to register for NEWL 2020 will be May 10. All students will receive instructions on how to take the exam in the modified format and will be asked to participate in a brief online orientation session several days prior to test administration on a date determined by American Councils.

Interested students and parents may contact [email protected] with questions related to NEWL registration or administration of the 2020 NEWL.

2020 NEWL Exam for Portuguese Language Learn about how the NEWL Exam for Portuguese language will be administered during the COVID-19 crisis.

HOW TO APPLY FOR THE EXAM?
Instructions: The first step is to apply for the exam at https://actesting.org/#/newl-main-app. The application is very simple, requiring only the name, title, email, and telephone number of the registrant (i.e. the person registering the student for the exam), as well as the name and address information of the student's institution (e.g. school, language program, etc.). Since the test has been moved to a remote format, you may leave the "testing center" information blank.

Once the application for the 2020 Portuguese NEWL exam has been received by our department, the registrant will be notified via email. The registrant will be responsible for registering the examinee(s) in the online registration system and for coordinating payment. In the email, there will be a link for completing that registration and payment as well as for the NEWL Registrant Instructions.
American Councils test administration specialists will handle all test proctoring and monitoring.

The students will be responsible for setting up their own labs. To help them do so, all students will receive instructions on how to set up their computers and how to take the exam in the modified format. All students will also participate in a brief online orientation session several days prior to test administration on a date determined by American Councils.
