424 S. Wabash
Orlando-based Ponte Health is proposing a 21-story tower with assisted living
and medical o
ffi
ce space, replacing a surface parking lot at Van Buren and Wabash.
Called Vertical Medical City, the project
will offer "light" assisted living: housing for those who might need help
with meals and other basic services. Ponte plans a building with about 250 assisted living units and 200,000 square feet of medical offices. Rent will include basic medical care,
including quarterly doctor visits and diagnostic tests.
The development's program may still be in flux, as a rendering released by Ponte shows a taller building:
South Loop Bike Connections
Construction began last week to return protected bike lanes to Harrison. Plastic delineators were removed last year as various utility construction projects proceeded, and CDOT has started work on the project to replace the protection, and enhance it with concrete curbs where room is available.
A related project is installing about 120 feet of two-way cycleway in front of Dearborn Station, providing a safer connection for cyclists using Plymouth Court and the Dearborn cycleway.
Columbia sculpture park renovation
A reconstruction of Columbia College's sculpture park at 11th and Wabash is intended to freshen the space and introduce a new music and theater performance area. Alas, due to what's being called "internal miscommunication," the pocket park's best-known feature, the concrete sculpture

One Central looks to state assistance
for new transit hub
The developer of a huge proposed office-retail-residential
to be built on air rights over Metra's Weldon Yard, east of Central Station, was clear from the beginning that it would not be seeking TIF assistance from the city. Turns out that's because it's seeking state and federal assistance instead.
Landmark Development is asking to have a new "transportation hub" beneath its project included in a huge capital funding bill that is working its way through the General Assembly, and hoping to also take advantage of federal funding for rail-related infrastructure. As proposed, the state would pay back the developer for construction of the transit hub and shopping mall over a 20-year period, after which the state would own the facility.
It's unclear how receptive state leaders are to the novel idea. Also unclear is how it would benefit the Chicago region to create a new hub at this location underneath the developer's development site, and what rail or transit services would logically be extended there.
Ald. Dowell has scheduled the first in a series of workshops examining the proposal, June 5th at 6 pm at McCormick Place West Room W184. At that meeting, she'll outline the process for further detailed examination and community engagement regarding the project.

Volunteers needed for Lit Fest
The Near South Planning Board, the original founders of the Printers Row Lit Fest, will again own and manage the event. This year's Printers Row Lit Fest will be held on June 8 and 9 along Dearborn between Ida B. Wells and Polk. The event will feature local and international booksellers, presses and publishers.
NSPB is seeking volunteers to help make the event run smoothly. Needed are author escorts, stage cooordinators, program and venue support, and greeter/info booth staff. To volunteer, phone 312-987-1980.
Mercy Hospital investigating Legionella outbreak
The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) announced that an investigation is underway to determine the source of Legionella disease that was found at Mercy Hospital (2525 S. Michigan). Mercy is fully supporting the investigations by the IDPH and the Chicago Department of Public Health to determine the source of the bacteria.
Mercy Hospital and its patients are safe. The hospital has followed the guidelines for safe water management set forth in the ASHRAE 188-2018 standard and the Centers for Disease Control toolkit for Legionella water management program.

Registration for South Loop Elementary for fall 2019 is open for neighborhood residents (those living north side of 18th Street to Wacker drive; east of the river to the lake). Documents needed for registration are included on the school
website. Register early so the school can adequately plan for staffing and space utilization.

Half Sour was established in 2017 as a neighborhood cafe and bar in the Printer's Row neighborhood of Chicago.
