Online Service: Bless the Imperfect
(10:30 am)
Happy Imperfect Mother's Day! Mothers are imperfect. All parents, all people are imperfect. Our families and communities are imperfect. Our whole world is especially imperfect right now. How do we love and bless all this imperfection? Today is another chance to embrace the messy journey of relationship, family, commitment and community.
Rev. Emily Hartlief holds degrees from Lewis and Clark and Starr King School for the Ministry. She currently serves as spiritual care counselor with Hospice East Bay. She is married to our developmental minister, Rev. Marcus, and they have worked together with UU congregations in Vancouver, BC and Rochester, NY.

Sunday Circle - 9:00 am
We have a special guest this Sunday -- our UU friend now in Florida, J
ames Davis II -- who will lead a session on
"Is Community Enlightenment an Oxymoron?"
Since Social Distancing means we can't gather in our Fireside Room, we have evolved a Zooming Circle. See connection information below.
As we all adapt to current events we have departed from our previous schedule of topics and leaders and re-purposed our group to simply be a place where, each week, we can
Connect in Community
Share Humor and Hope
Support Creativity and Curiosity
A volunteer leader welcomes participants, lights a chalice, and offers a reading and topic for the day, often one that has evolved from the previous week's conversation. We will have a few minutes of silence for contemplation, and then take turns responding with thoughts or asking related questions. We also make time for shared joys and concerns.
Use the following link for Sunday Circle at 9:00 am:

This Week in Religious Exploration
|
This seems like a wonderful time to support mothers and those who have helped guide us to find ways of peace in hard times. Many of us may know that Mother's Day was seeded by Julia Ward Howe, a strong Unitarian woman who rewrote the words to a fatalistic civil war battle song, "John's Brown's Body" into an empowering anthem, "The Battle Hymn of the Republic," that looked to strengthen one's soul in the horrific events of war.
Severely disturbed by the effects of the war on soldiers and families, Howe determined that women, mothers especially, have an expressed duty to promote peace in the world. In 1870, she issued a "Mother's Day Proclamation" to unify women against the devastation and brutality of war. In 1907, a schoolteacher named Anna Jarvis initiated a crusade for Mother's Day and eventually succeeded in having the holiday established the second Sunday in May.
This Week in Religious Exploration
This Sunday the preschool to 1st grade gathering at 9:30 am will hold a Mother's tea.
So, until next week, be safe, stay healthy and sleep well.
For joy and justice in an imperfect world,
Rev. Lynne Scarpa
Director of Family Ministries

Calling All Hobbyists, Artists & Crafters!
|
The Fundraising/Celebrating Team would like to begin planning an Art and Craft Fair as a
FUNdRAISER for a date to be determined (when we can once again gather together) or
perhaps we'll do it online. We plan to offer fine art, photography, and a variety of crafts and
plants for sale, activities for children, food items, bake sale, music and fun for all ages. We're in
the planning stages, so your ideas are welcome.
Now is the perfect opportunity to start planning when some of us have time on our hands.
Please join us as part of the committee or as a contributor.
Do you have a hobby or craft that translates to something to sell? Think about hosting your own
craft table.
Are you interested in finding something to keep you busy while sheltering in place? We invite
you to take up a craft project and share a table with others.
Do you have a one-of-a-kind piece (a quilt, a painting, a wall hanging, a sculpture). We'd love to
showcase your work along with the work of others.
Do you know someone who would love to join us? Please pass along their name. You can give
Joan a call at 518-588-0822 or drop her a line at joanesq93@gmail.com.
Come join us.

Wednesday, May 13, virtual gathering via Zoom.
Knitters and crocheters of all skill levels are invited to join in ongoing efforts to create handmade items for children and adults facing challenging life circumstances. Our current effort is creating knitted or crocheted 10" squares to be assembled into blankets for Syrian refugees. Wool hats and scarves also welcome. Several sewers are also making protective masks.
Patterns and guidance provided. The current sheltering has prompted us to schedule two meetings per month on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays. This month's video sessions will be held on Wednesday, May 13 and Wednesday, May 27 between 6:30 and 8:00 pm.
