Alachua County Supervisor of Elections receives national recognition for University of Florida partnership
ALACHUA COUNTY, Fla. (September 9, 2019) — The Alachua County Supervisor of Elections Office was recognized by the Election Center for its 2018 election cycle partnership with the University of Florida.
At its August national conference in Orlando, the Election Center awarded its Stars and Stripes Award for Outstanding Partnerships to the Alachua County Supervisor of Elections.
During the 2018 election cycle, nearly 8,000 voters used the University of Florida’s J. Wayne Reitz Union to vote early, making it the third-most popular early voting site in Alachua County and the most popular early voting site on a Florida college campus. Working together, the elections office and the University of Florida created a comprehensive communications plan that made students, faculty and staff aware of the J. Wayne Reitz Union’s availability as an early voting location.
“We are so proud to have collaborated with the University of Florida in creating a successful partnership,” Supervisor of Elections Kim A. Barton said. “Without the work of the University of Florida and Bob Graham Center for Public Service, we couldn’t have done what we did.”
Turnout among voters between the ages of 18 and 25 more than doubled compared to the last midterm election in 2014, increasing from 25.7 percent to 53.9 percent.
This the first national award the Alachua County Supervisor of Elections Office has received.
The Election Center, based in Katy, Texas, is also known as the National Association of Elections Officials.

Three ACPS students named semifinalists in prestigious national science competition
Alachua County Public School students continue to distinguish themselves at the national level in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) fields.
Three local students have been named semifinalists in the 2019 Broadcom MASTERS competition, considered one of the most prestigious STEM competitions for middle school students. The competition is sponsored annually by the Broadcom Foundation and Society for Science and the Public. The semifinalists were selected from among more than 2,300 applicants.
Buchholz High School freshman Angela Gao, Eastside High School freshman Akash Verma and Gainesville High School freshman David Cagle are among Broadcom’s Top 300 MASTERS from throughout the nation. The students qualified with projects they submitted during the 2017-18 school year, when Gao and Verma were enrolled at Lincoln Middle School and Cagle was enrolled at Oak Hall.
Gao was recognized for her project ‘Evaluation and Optimization of Photocatalytic Ability of Graphitic Carbon Nitride for Contaminant Renewal.’ Verma was named semifinalist for a project called ‘A Novel Study to Evaluate the Possible Effects of RF Radiation on Human Brain Waves and Testing Innovative Strategies to Lower RF Levels from RF-Emitting Devices.’ Cagle’s project was ‘

This is the second year that Verma has been named a Broadcom Top 300 MASTER.
Multiple Alachua County Public School students have been named semifinalists in the program every year since its inception in 2011.
To qualify for consideration in the Broadcom MASTERS competition, students must be top performers at science fairs across the country. They must then submit an extensive online application which is reviewed by expert judges. Besides providing information about their projects, the students must submit information about their other academic achievements, extracurricular and other activities. They must also respond to essay questions to demonstrate their creativity.
Thirty of the 300 national semifinalists will be selected as finalists later this month. Those selected will travel to Washington, DC in October to compete for more than $100,000 in prizes.

Colliers International in Gainesville Facilitates Sale and Lease of 9,101-Square-Foot Building in Grove Street Submarket
The Hatchetbury, Gainesville’s first recreational axe-throwing facility, will lease space
The Drotos Ryals Team of Colliers International in Gainesville has facilitated the sale and lease of a 9,101-square-foot building in the Grove Street submarket, located at 219 NW 8th Avenue.
The building previously housed Walker Furniture, Inc. The five-year lease will support the opening of The Hatchetbury, Gainesville’s first recreational axe throwing business.
Dan Drotos, Rory Causseaux and Mike Ryals represented all parties in the transaction: seller, Benny Ledger Walker; buyer, Stetz Partners LLC; and new tenant, Axe Evolution LLC (DBA as The Hatchetbury). The lease was executed on July 22, 2019, and the sale closed July 29, 2019.
The redevelopment of the building will begin in September with an anticipated grand opening in December 2019. Two additional Gainesville firms, Level Architecture and Joyner Construction, have been engaged to design the facility, which will include areas for axe throwing, indoor bocce ball and a shuffleboard court.
The Hatchetbury will bring more than 20 new jobs to Gainesville, while also contributing to the evolution of Grove Street as a major urban infill site. The submarket’s combination of industrial buildings and residential neighborhoods has attracted interest from a variety of businesses in recent months.
“As the retail industry continues to evolve, recreational concepts like The Hatchetbury are backfilling large, vacant retail spaces,” said Drotos. “Our team’s expertise in the market allowed us to bring the right people to the table to transform this once-empty space into a unique destination. Axe-throwing is growing in popularity, and we’re proud to have played a role in bringing the first concept to Gainesville.”

United Way of North Central Florida wins two awards from statewide Public Relations organization
GAINESVILLE, FL (Sept. 5, 2019) — United Way of North Central Florida (UWNCFL) has been recognized once again at the Florida Public Relations Association (FPRA) Annual Golden Image Awards celebration.
On Tuesday, August 6, United Way of North Central Florida won an Award of Distinction and a Judges’ Award at the state-wide annual FPRA Golden Image Awards celebration. An Award of Distinction is presented to entries that meet the standards of excellence set by a panel of judges in the public relations field. A Judges’ Award is presented by the judges for an outstanding entry that achieves maximum results while using a minimum amount of money.
The Online Promotion category entry focused on UWNCFL’s 2018 fundraising efforts for their ReadingPals program as a part of The Amazing Give, a 24-hour day of giving sponsored by the Community Foundation of North Central Florida.
As a result of this public relations campaign, nearly $8,000 was raised for ReadingPals, UWNCFL’s early-literacy initiative that helps to improve third grade reading levels by pairing students with volunteer mentors for one hour per week throughout the school year.
FPRA’s Golden Image Awards competition included awards such as Award of Distinction, Golden Image Award, Judges’ Award, Grand Golden Image Award and Dick Pope All Florida Golden Image Award. According to FPRA’s website, “to qualify, a Golden Image entry must incorporate sound public relations research and planning.” These entries included high standards of production, execution and evaluation of results and budget.
In addition to being recognized at the state-wide competition, UWNCFL also won an Image Award, Judges’ Award and Grand Image Award at the local FPRA Gainesville Image Awards ceremony on April 18.
