Business Will Play a Critical Role in Bringing the Global Economy Back to Health

While international public health experts warn that “the worst is yet ahead” in the global community’s efforts to tackle coronavirus, a small number of countries are taking first steps towards a gradual reopening. In the past week, Germany, Norway, and several other European countries lifted restrictions on business operations and opened some schools. India, which implemented one of the world’s strictest lockdowns, has unveiled plans for a gradual reopening and recently allowed manufacturing and agricultural work on a limited basis. (View our  Global Dashboard  for the latest.)

As these predominantly wealthy countries consider their next steps, a crisis is brewing in the developing world. Many fragile economies have yet to feel the full impact of coronavirus and are unprepared to deal with either the health or fiscal crisis that the virus will unleash. With more than  90 countries already seeking support  from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), global institutions may not have the resources or capacity to respond.

With leaders across the globe considering how to tackle these emerging challenges, it’s clear that the private sector will have a critical role to play in supporting economic recovery. The Chamber is working closely with our network of 127 American Chambers of Commerce across the globe to track on-the-ground developments and share best practices. We hosted former National Security Advisors Tom Donilon and Stephen Hadley for a conversation on global risks and have launched working groups to discuss the international economic and trade implications of COVID-19. We look forward to sharing more from these efforts in the weeks ahead. In the meantime, we also invite you to  share your thoughts .
