FROM THE DIRECTOR

Once more, light has been shed on the systemic racism in our country with the deaths of African Americans and the significant outcry across our nation and the world.

At the Wichita State Public Policy and Management Center, we have given thought to how or what we can do to be part of the solution of change for equity and inclusion. We ask ourselves, "What is our role in helping organizations and communities address systemic racism, exclusion and inequity? How do we help move beyond words of outrage to actions of impact?" The short answer is we are not sure, AND we are committed to figuring it out.

Here is where we are in the discussion:

1. Education is Critical.
We will start by educating ourselves. Through a monthly commitment, our staff will read, watch, or listen to items that expand our understanding of racism, equity and inclusion.  We will also focus our work regarding racism equity and inclusion in management, policy, and public engagement because that is our wheelhouse.  And, we will share our journey and resources with your organization.

2. Listening and Uncomfortable Conversations Are Critical.
Our team is committed to having difficult conversations internally and externally on race, equity and inclusion that require courage and vulnerability.  Our desire to make change will be greater than our desire to remain comfortable.

3. Long-Term Commitment Is the Only Option.
Progress on anything difficult and multifaceted takes time and commitment.  Our commitment to racial equity and inclusion cannot exist only during moments of crisis.  Our Center is committed to sharing monthly resources to help all organizations and communities address systemic racism, inequity and exclusion.  We hope you will join us on this journey so that all of our organizations, communities and residents have the opportunity to thrive.  These conversations belong to all of us, and we welcome your thoughts and feedback.

Our website has a new resource site for personal, professional and organizational development on racism and inclusion that might be helpful to your organizations.

The Way to Work Summer Youth Program

For the 9th year, the City of Wichita
announces The Way to Work summer youth employment program for 2020, and you are invited to participate as a job placement site.  The Way to Work program will run from June 29th- July 31st.

Youth will be the ages of 14-17 and are members of families who meet residency and/or income guidelines. All youth will be City employees, with City ID badges, uniforms, and their wages paid in full by the City.

Training/Workshop: Youth ages 14-17 will be expected to attend a mandatory four hour workshop each day on June 24-25.
Work Schedules: Youth ages 14-17 will work four hours daily at the job site.

The actual on-site work hours will be determined by each work site but should not exceed four hours per day. Suggested morning and afternoon shifts are 8:30am-12:30pm; 12:30pm-4:30pm; or any four hour shift ending by 5:00pm.

Please consider serving as a work site for 2020. The youth are excited to land their first job, build a strong work ethic, earn their own money and learn how to manage it. We are excited about the opportunity to instill positive work ethics and practices in these teenagers, which will impact the rest of their lives. Feedback from prior year placements confirm that the youth have made a positive contribution in their assigned sites adding value to the entire experience. We hope you will agree to join us this year.

If you are interested in a youth working at your site, or if you have any questions, please complete this form and return to [email protected].
