Parent Leadership Academy Fosters Strong School Communities
|
|
This week, parent leaders from across the district joined together for training at GGUSD's Parent Leadership Academy held at the Garden Grove Community Center. Parents learned how to get engaged and serve as a leader at their school sites. The collaboration was wonderful and GGUSD is fortunate to have many fantastic parents. The Academy was spearheaded by Superintendent Gabriela Mafi who also provided a wonderful introduction, participated in table discussions, met with parents, and served lunch.

Evans Organizes Wax Museum as Living Lesson of Historical Heroes
|
|
Evans Elementary second grade teachers sure know how to make learning fun! As part of their Social Studies work, students selected and studied a historical hero, and prepared a written report, and a short presentation, which they presented during a fun Wax Museum event for friends and families. Those who attended the event had an opportunity to meet Neil Armstrong, Frederick Douglass, Cesar Chavez, Jane Goodall, Michelle Obama, Maya Angelou, Walt Disney, Mae Jemison, Sally Ride, Helen Keller, and Maya Ying, among others.

Earlier this month, GGUSD schools and parent teacher organizations hosted a variety of events for national Teacher Appreciation Week and California Day of the Teacher. Included here are photos from celebrations hosted at Paine and Morningside elementary schools. GGUSD has the best teachers around and we are grateful for their commitment to help all students succeed!

Bell Students Earn Second Place in MathCounts Competition
|
Bell Intermediate students won second place in the Vietnamese-American Aerospace Peers Association MathCounts Competition! Bell math teachers prepared three teams who all advanced to the final round of the competition. Way to go scholars!!

GGUSD Bus Drivers and School Nurses Receive Special Recognition
|
|
Last week, the Board of Education recognized GGUSD bus drivers for their award-winning performance demonstrating safe bus driving skills during the annual Bus Roadeo safe driving competition! Thanks to our drivers for providing a safe ride to our most precious cargo!

Congrats to GGUSD's Michelle Rymer who was honored with the Orange County School Nurse of the Year award at the Orange County School Nurses Organization Spring Conference. We are grateful to Michelle and all of our school nurses for caring for our staff and students.

GGUSD Receives Top Award for Successful Parent Engagement Program
|
At its seventh annual Language Leaner Celebration, the Orange County Department of Education awarded Garden Grove Unified School District with the 2019 Advocacy Leadership award for the district’s successful parent and civic engagement program.
The award was presented to Board of Education Vice President Teri Rocco; Superintendent Gabriela Mafi; Executive Director of K-12 Educational Services Lorena Sanchez; Acting Coordinator of Parent and Community Outreach Teresa Jackson; and the district’s Parent and Community Outreach Department team members on May 2 at the Marconi Automotive Museum in Irvine.
The special event also honored dozens of outstanding educators across Orange County, including Eisenhower Elementary Teacher Brandy Peters and Bolsa Grande High School Teacher Erich Phinizy for the outstanding educational experience they provide for English learners and emerging bilingual students.

Student Council Fun at Barker

Barker Elementary Student Council had a busy year providing students with fun activities all year long. Some of the activities include an obstacle course (photo above); Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas grams; and Crazy Days including Wear Green Wednesday, Tourist Day, Beach Day, and more!

Thank you to our wonderful partner Endologix in Irvine for sponsoring our district's STEAM Fest, inviting our winners to present their innovative product proposals to Endologix engineers, and providing scholarships, trophies, and medals to our students. Congrats to our winning teams with Bell Intermediate in first place, Irvine Intermediate in second place, and Walton Intermediate in third place.

Registration is Open for Preschool

Registration is now open for Garden Grove Unified School District’s high quality preschool programs. Enroll today for the 2019-2020 school year for one of the following preschool programs:
- Brand new affordable full-day preschool at the Skylark Campus (offered at 11250 Mac Murray St., Garden Grove)
The new Skylark fee-based Preschool will have highly-trained credentialed teachers who provide students with a warm and caring preschool experience. The preschool will offer enrichment activities in dual language, technology, science, engineering, arts, math, and more. The full-day, fee-based program will provide the same exceptional educational curriculum offered in our half-day state preschool program, with opportunities for before and after school care.
Children born between 12/3/2014 and 12/1/2016 are age eligible for our program. Space is limited for our 3-year-old classes for students born between 12/3/2015 and 09/1/2016.
