November 5th ballot.

Student and Family
Resources Clothing Drive:
The annual clothing drive sponsored by Student and Family Resources will be collecting donations through October 25th.  Please bring new or gently used clothing items to any of our collection sites: Goods, Flinthills Mall, Dillons, KVOE, Emporia Mainstreet, and Emporia Gazette.

Early Resignation/Retirement Notification Incentive:
Any licensed teacher who has worked greater than two years in USD 253 who is planning to resign or retire at the end of the school year is eligible to receive an early notification stipend.  A written resignation or retirement notice must be submitted to the assistant superintendent of Human Resources. Stipends will be awarded according to the time table below at the end of the contract year.  Written notification received by:
  • November 1st would receive $750
  • December 1st would receive $500
  • January 1st would receive $250

Open House Opportunities:
If you have not been inside certain schools recently you are encouraged to visit them during our upcoming open houses. Village, Logan Avenue, William Allen White, Maynard, and Emporia Middle School will be open for tours and informal conversations on the following dates.

Trick or Trot 2019 Registration: This year our annual Trick or Trot 5k will be held on Saturday, October 26th at Emporia Middle School. You can pre-register by clicking on the following link  Trick or Trot 2019 Registration On-site registration/check-in will begin at 8:00 AM with the event kicking off at 9:00 AM.

Students and staff from Walnut Elementary recently participated in "A Day at the Farm".  Students were able to see animals and activities associated with farming. Thank you to the Wingert Family and their community partners for sponsoring this event.

Board Updates:
Bond Market  Dustin Avey, Managing Director with Piper Jaffray provided an updated finance plan for the proposed bond election based on a number of factors including the recent market and interest rate changes. With the new information, Avey said the mill levy increase could potentially be as low as .5 mills rather than 2.95 mills as originally calculated.  For detailed financing information and a full report click here.

Kindergarten Ramp Up - Judy Stanley, Associate Director of Teaching and Learning provided an overview of the Kindergarten Ramp Up program history and how it supports the Kansas Can outcomes for kindergarten readiness.  Kindergarten Ramp Up is supported by a Mobilizing Literacy Grant and provided summer learning opportunities for students who were unable to attend preschool prior to starting kindergarten. This past summer Riverside, William Allen White, and Village Elementary hosted a total of 39 students.

November 5th Bond Election  - Kevin Case Superintendent, provided the following updates:
  • Maynard staff participated in a ThoughExchange to share their priorities for a new early learning center
  • weekly building spotlights are being published in the Gazette, emailed to staff, and emailed to parents Click here to view
  • building facts are posted each week on Facebook and Twitter
  • Community Relations is providing social media reminders to community stakeholders and building principals of important early learning center updates and voting opportunities and deadlines
  • Mr. Case will be on KVOE Radio October 14th discussing the open house dates
  • District representatives will be touring four early learning facilities on October 14th in Kansas City to gather additional information. 
  • voter registration closes on October 15th

  • an early voting opportunity will be held on October 19th at the Flint Hills Mall

Early Learning Center - The district is working collaboratively with HTK architects to further organize the data that has been collected over the past few weeks from staff, board members and community stakeholders.  A discussion took place regarding the early learning facility and the twelve different themes including safety and security, age-appropriate space, appropriate sized amenities as well as others that have emerged as the information has been analyzed and continues to be collected. 

Board Policy Updates - The policy committee met in September and has provided changes to the board policies as recommended by the Kansas Association of School Boards (KASB). Policy GAAA was removed and not included in the list of policies to approve so that additional research can be done to provide new language that will be voted on at a later date.

Students from Emporia High School had the opportunity on Tuesday morning to participate in Apply Kansas.  Students submitted admissions applications to their top post-secondary school choices.
