Coronavirus Update 7
Dear San Marino Unified Staff, Students, Families, and Community,

As we have been, we remain in partnership with the LA County Office of Education, LA County Department of Public Health, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), school districts across the state, and state agencies in continuing to closely monitor the novel coronavirus, now known as COVID-19.

Please find a breakdown of the most recent news/developments, actions being taken by our District, and actions you can take to help keep our community at low risk of being impacted by COVID-19.

What are the most recent developments of COVID-19?
  • The health risk from COVID-19 to the public remains low at this time.
  • As of today, there are a total of 6 deaths in the U.S., all in Washington state.
  • As of today, California has had 7 travel-related cases, one case that was the result of close contact, and one community transmission (in Solano County). There are no new cases of COVID-19 in Los Angeles County.
  • Destinations with a risk of community spread of COVID-19 include: China, Hong Kong, Iran, Italy, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand.
What is San Marino Unified doing to prepare?
  • Our prior experiences with H1N1, SARS, and norovirus have given us sound points of reference in combating COVID-19, and we are actively collaborating with our local, state, and national agencies to tailor our plan to COVID-19.
  • We have a robust inventory of needed supplies, our staff is trained in cleaning and disinfecting classrooms, and our health clerks are experts in watching for symptoms and providing guidance to families.
  • We are continuously promoting practicing healthy habits to combat the spread of any illness.
  • We remain dedicated to staying informed, keeping our community informed, and taking any subsequent action we can as presented by any new information we receive.
What can staff, students, and families do to stay healthy?
  • There are a number of steps we can take to protect our health and the health of those around us. Practicing healthy habits daily is the best way to combat the spread of illness, which include the following important five flu-fighting methods :
    • Regularly washing hands with soap and water FOR 20 SECONDS (which is close to the amount of time it take to hum the alphabet)
    • Avoid touching eyes, nose or mouth with unwashed hands
    • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when coughing or sneezing
    • Stay away from work, school, and other people if you feel sick
    • Avoid close contact with people who are sick
  • Be prepared and informed, but refrain from panic. Here's a great BrainPOP video  for you and your students to watch to help gain further perspective on the coronavirus.
Again, while this is a rapidly evolving situation, the risk of COVID-19 spreading in our community remains low at this time. We ask that you join us in practicing sound judgment by engaging in panic-free preparedness. As always, we remain as committed as ever to doing all we can to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in our community, as are we actively coordinating with our city, county, state, and national agencies to ensure we are implementing any evolving best practices and solidifying a sound plan of action that will help us keep our community healthy and well. In addition, we will continue to update our coronavirus information webpage with these and other updates. Thank you for continuing to partner with us as we all work together to promote the health and well-being of our San Marino community.

Sincerely,
San Marino Unified School District
