UPDATED COVID-19 PROTOCOLS
Effective June 6, 2021, in recognition of the new CDC guidelines issued May 14, 2021 and current Diocesan guidance, All Saints’ Episcopal Church will no longer require masks be worn by vaccinated individuals at services or on the church campus. Masks are required for everyone on the Day School Campus.
Per Diocesan directive, people who are not fully vaccinated (defined as 2 weeks past the final dose of vaccine) are still required to wear masks at all times while at church, and we encourage anyone else who feels more comfortable wearing a mask, particularly those who are health-compromised, to continue to wear one. Masks may still be required of all participants in certain circumstances or at specific events, and the Church will communicate such instances accordingly.

A Reflection
from Fr. Tim Yanni
I’m the kind of person who has frequently found rules to be ambiguous. In fact, people in my life have told me, “Fr. Tim, you’re the kind of guy who likes to break the rules.” Oddly enough, I have also been told, “Fr. Tim, you’re the kind of guy who always follows the rules.” It seems like these two statements ought to be at odds. So how can they possibly be accurate about the same person?
The truth of the matter is that there are different kinds of rules for different times and different places. For instance, the United States Golf Association has a very strict rulebook when it comes to the rules of golf. But rest assured, if you ever hit the golf course with me (and if you’re looking for a golf buddy, hit me up!), you don’t have to worry about me counting every single one of your strokes or charging you with a penalty stroke if you take a mulligan or use a “toe wedge” to escape the overhanging branches of a tree in your way. Playing by the USGA’s rules during competition is important because it upholds the integrity of the game. But playing by “house rules” when you’re playing with Fr. Tim, gives us a chance to laugh at ourselves, to have a little more fun, and to not worry about things that are somewhat trivial at the moment.
What about liturgical rubrics? Are those rules that can be broken? If so, when do we break them? To answer this question, it is important to outline the difference between “rubrics” and “customary”. The rubrics are rules in the Prayer Book that must be followed. The customary is the set of guidelines most frequently used in a particular place. You might notice, for instance, that the rubric for the Lord’s Prayer allows us to use two different translations. At All Saints’, our customary informs us that we use the traditional translation virtually without exception. In this case, neither option is wrong, per se. However, using the contemporary translation might feel much more out of place. From time to time you might notice a different option in use. When the option chosen is not of your preference, I encourage you to take a deep breath and notice that the decision was very likely made in an effort to make sure the worshipping community is aware that there are simply other ways of doing things. These “rules” might be broken as an educational tool.
Other rules keep us safe. For example, everyone who works or volunteers at All Saints’ (or any organization within the Diocese of Arizona) must complete regular certification in Safe Church Worker training. This training teaches participants how to observe inappropriate, damaging, and/or illegal behavior, and it gives us “best practices” we can follow for keeping ourselves and our fellow parishioners safe. The rules within this Safeguarding training are not flexible at all. We must follow them at all times and in all situations. One important reason for this is the promotion of good Christian stewardship. We are called to care for one another.
If you know me (and I’m guessing you probably know me pretty well by now!), you know that I love to have fun and I love to model having fun as we live into our Christian vocations. I can say with authority that some unimportant rules are fun to break (go ahead, use that toe wedge!). But other rules must never be broken. For the sake of promoting a fun, healthy, and safe environment here at All Saints’, let us remember that rules protecting the safety of the people of God must always be followed under every circumstance. All Saints’ is a wonderful place where we glorify God through beautiful liturgy and music, praise, and thanksgiving. If you’re ever in doubt about why rubrics are modified, please ask a member of the clergy. We love to “talk shop” and we’re eager to share what we know with you! And if you’re ever in doubt about a rule regarding public safety, always err on the side of caution until you have a chance to gain clarity. All Saints’ is a safe space. Each of us has to do our part to keep it that way.

Reprinted here in case you missed it last week.
From Fr. Bill Lupfer, Interim Rector
Dear Friends,
Change is in the air.
Below is the letter of resignation from Joseph Ripka. Joey has served All Saints’ with energy and vigor these past three and a half years and I know each one of you will miss him. We will celebrate Joey’s time with us on Sunday, July 25th, after the 10am liturgy. Please be sure to thank Joey for his ministry with us.
Trevor Carolan, who was interim Music Director before Joey arrived and has actively continued working in the Music Department at All Saints’, will be employed this year to lead our choirs and Sunday liturgies. I am pleased with Trevor’s involvement and the continuity it gives to All Saints’ at this time. Trevor’s time with us will give the new rector time to get settled and call a new Director of Music.
For now, we celebrate Joey’s ministry and keep calm and carry on!
Bill Lupfer

From Joseph Ripka, Director of Music
Dear Friends at All Saints’
It is with some sadness that I write to inform you that I will be leaving All Saints’ Episcopal Church. I have resigned as Director of Music and have accepted a position as Canon for Music at Saint Paul’s Episcopal Cathedral, Oklahoma City and Diocesan Music Missioner. My three and one-half years as Director of Music at All Saints’ have been rewarding and enjoyable, even in the face of the limitations brought on by the pandemic and transitional leadership.
I am so appreciative of the friendship and support that my family and I have felt from so many at All Saints’. I have enjoyed working with all of the musical talents, and am particularly proud of the strong after-school chorister program, which I was able to initiate and develop. It is my hope that you will continue to give your support to music at All Saints’ and in particular work to promote the continuing success of the chorister program.
We are fortunate that Trevor Carolan will continue on in the music department for another year. As you know, Trevor brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise in music and liturgy, and will undoubtedly be a strong leader to guide you forward.
My last Sunday at All Saints’ will be July 25th. Erin, Clara and I will miss the warmth and friendship that so many of you have shown us. We wish you all the best and hope and pray that All Saints’ Church will thrive under a new rector.
Sincerely,
Joey, Erin & Clara

Update to the Congregation
from the Rector Search Committee
|
July 11, 2021
Greetings! By the time this hits your in-box, we will have almost completed the recruitment phase of gathering applications. We began April 15 when the diocese posted our recruitment on the Office of Transition Ministry website. We originally planned to end recruitment eight weeks later, but extended the time frame an extra five weeks to allow for additional outreach and marketing. We felt this was important as congregations and clergy emerge from the effects and restrictions of the pandemic. During this phase, we regularly updated our Rector Search webpage, created timely marketing materials, and continued our outreach through various organizations.
After recruitment closes July 19, the diocese will conduct background checks on the applicants, then forward the applications that pass those checks to us, which we expect in the mid-August timeframe. The committee will then engage in discernment before conducting interviews.
As events unfold, we will continue to provide updates through the E-News and to the Vestry.
Thank you for your prayers and support!
Faithfully,
Derek D. Horn, Chair
Marcia Scott, Vice Chair

Donate to Nourish Phoenix (formerly ICM)
Our outreach partner, ICM, is now Nourish Phoenix, and it's mission remains the same: To serve the working poor with food, clothing, and other basic necessities. In the last few months, Nourish Phoenix has seen a sharp increase in the number of clients reaching out for support, and there is a particular shortage of personal hygiene products (soap, body wash, shampoo, toothbrushes, toothpaste) and cleaning products like laundry detergent. They also always need non-perishable, protein-rich food, nutritious children's snacks, clothes and shoes (particularly men's and children's), and baby care products. If you can help, bring your donations to church at any time, and place them in the red bins out in front of the main doors to the sanctuary. Contact Pastor Emilie Finn with any questions: efinn@allsaintsoncentral.org.

Altar Flowers Update
We all enjoy our lovely flowers at the altar, and we will continue to celebrate memorials and special occasions when parishioners make a flower dedication with a donation of $100 or more. To provide ample time for the process, please allow a minimum of 2 weeks before the date you want to commemorate. Send your dedication information to Nanette Towsley at ntowsley@allsaintsoncentral.org and either mail the check made out to All Saints’ with "altar flowers" on the memo line, or put in the offering basket at services. We continue to work hard to be good stewards of our resources. The current cost for our weekly flowers is just under $100. We will only provide flowers when they are donated. We appreciate your understanding.
