Mental Health Crises on Campuses
|

"Young adulthood is a time of growth, learning, and exploration - a time to start building a life of one's own and to feel excitement about the future. Yet, for many of our nation's 21 million college students, transitioning into adulthood can be a time of significant struggles and intense challenges. We see the effects in headlines every day: a death from binge drinking, an overdose, a suicide."
"Depression and anxiety also have a negative impact on GPA. A 2016-17 Healthy Minds Survey of 8,000 first year students from 48 campuses found that 94% of all first-year students with depression reported that mental health difficulties had impaired their academic performance."

Adding an International Experience to Your Course
- November 12 (Monday) at noon in Camden-Carroll Training Room (100) - This professional Development is offered by Kelly Collinsworth. She is an Associate Professor of Legal Studies, Campus Pre-law Advisor, and Director of Education Abroad. She started working at MSU in 2008 after practicing law in the Morehead area for eleven years. In addition to her role at MSU, she is also an assistant County Attorney in Bath County.
Writing Effective Outcomes, Choosing Measures and Setting Targets for Academic Programs:
- November 20 (Tuesday) from 2pm to 4:30pm in Combs 413 - This training will focus on writing concise and appropriate learning outcomes, choosing appropriate measures and setting appropriate targets for academic programs. The training will delineate the differences in goals and outcomes and how to articulate outcomes, specifically define what student learning outcomes are and provide examples of good outcomes for such academic programs. Also, the training will explore appropriate measures to utilize based on the outcome to be assessed. Setting appropriate targets and how to articulate targets will also be discussed.

Using Core Texts in the Classroom
- November 27 (Tuesday) at 1pm in Camden-Carroll Training Room (100) - This professional Development is offered by Christopher Beckham. He is an Assistant Professor of Education in the Department of Foundational and Graduate Studies in Education (FGSE). He was hired as a full time instructor in 2011, and became an Assistant Professor in 2015. Prior to that Dr. Beckham was an adjunct, teaching both history and education courses here from 1998-2010. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Kentucky. In his spare time, he enjoys working around his farm in Fleming County and keeping up with the Cincinnati Reds.
Career Exploring Appropriate Outcomes, Measures and Targets for Assessing Administrative & Educational Support Units:
- February 22 (Friday) from 2pm to 4:30pm in Combs 413 - This session will focus on formulating appropriate outcomes, measures and assessment plans:
- Defines outcome
- Choosing appropriate outcomes
- Define measures
- Direct vs. indirect measures
- Appropriate measures for different types of outcomes
- Setting appropriate targets
- Completing action plans/continuous improvement

MSU Event:
- #METOO Movement Lecture - TOMORROW (November 8th) at 4:30pm in 002 Breckinridge Hall. The lecture is called “Bad Sex, Sexual Assault and #MeToo: The Personal is Political and What to do About It.” During the talk, Huebner will discuss the importance of making social change that is survivor-based, intersectional and visible. Huebner draws on social movement theory and gender studies theory to describe how the #MeToo movement is different from other social movements.

Higher education faculty, professionals, students and educators are invited to
submit proposals
on a topic addressing:
- Share innovative ideas and practices you are using to solve problems and enable transformative course redesign at your institution.
- Connect and collaborate with colleagues from other institutions who are working to integrate active learning and other strategies into how they teach gateway courses.
- Share evidence about how your course redesign efforts are improving student success and learning and/or advancing more equitable outcomes.
- We value your students' perspectives in all aspects of teaching and learning and encourage you to consider having a student(s) as co-presenter(s).
