Supporting Our Elders!
#SupportOurElders

To Our Portuguese Community,

We are dealing with an unprecedented international epidemic.  In spite of the challenges facing us, we have always been resourceful and resilient as Portuguese Americans and there is no doubt that we will be this time as well.  Even though staying safe during the Coronavirus crisis is of primary concern, we can and should continue on as best we can.

PALCUS has launched a few initiatives to help support our community in various ways with the #SupportPortugueseBusiness and #PortugueseHeroes campaigns.  Our newest initiative is aimed at helping the elderly in our community - #SupportOurElders.  We have partnered with several Portuguese-American organizations who are already doing amazing work to help our elders, and we want to support these efforts. Below are several ways you can help, including:
  • Sending cards and messages of support
  • Sponsoring a meal (or meals) for the elderly
  • Donating a device to enable video chats
  • Delivering activity sheets to the elderly
Join us and help support these organizations who are supporting our elders !!

Send Cards and Messages of Support
PALCUS encourages members of the community to send cards, drawings, and messages of support to help bring a smile to the faces of the elderly.  Please send these cards and messages directly to MAPS, IAC, POSSO, VALER and NYPALC and they will be distributed along with the meals.

Sponsor a Meal for the Elderly
Seniors are the most  vulnerable during this pandemic and no one should have to go hungry during the coronavirus outbreak. Your generosity will sponsor a meal delivered directly to their door. 100% of your donation goes toward the preparation, packaging and delivery of the meal.

Our partners are taking care of our elders ( MAPS POSSO IAC VALERNYPALC ) and will be delivering the meals directly to seniors.
Device Donations
There is a great need for the elderly to have face to face interactions with people, and the only way to do this during this crisis is with mobile devices.  Unfortunately not all elderly have these devices, so we are asking for people to donate smart phones and tablets for use when communicating with the elderly.  The devices can be sent directly to MAPS, IAC, POSSO, VALER and NYPALC at the addresses provided above.

Activity Book
PALCUS has put together an activity book that can be printed out and given to the elderly to keep them engaged.  Spectrum Lithograph in Fremont, CA has agreed to print a batch at no cost, and we are working on securing other printing sources in New England and New York.  The activity book will soon be available on Amazon for anyone to purchase and send to an elderly loved one.

PALCUS Mission

In order to create a singular voice to advocate  for the Portuguese-American and Luso-American communities at large, the Portuguese-American Leadership Council of the United States Inc. (PALCUS) was founded in 1991 as a non-partisan, non-profit, organization headquartered in Washington, D.C.

The PALCUS mission is to address domestic and international concerns of the Portuguese-American Community.

The Council conducts an expanding program of educational and public affairs activities on issues of interest to the Portuguese-American community and of salience to the Luso-American Relationship.

PALCUS is committed to serving the community through increasingly active government relations efforts, the promotion of a greater awareness of ethnic accomplishments and encouraging stronger ties between Portugal and the United States. In this role PALCUS advances the community professionally, politically and culturally while working to ensure that issues directly affecting our community are addressed through our network of government and community leaders.

PALCUS is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization under the IRS tax code and  incorporated under the laws of the District of Columbia.  Donations are tax deductible to extent allowed by law and will be acknowledged.
