Monday, April 20th marks our official return to curriculum-based learning – remotely!
Students at the high school level can expect to have about three to five hours of assigned learning per day. For many of us this will be a welcome return to a more regular schedule and more focus on completing the school year -
for more information on what to expect click the button below to the LWSD Remote Learning website.

For information on technology and the systems being used for remote learning,
including the new implementation of Microsoft Classroom Teams, be sure to check your student’s email and PowerSchool for further information and updates.
Best of luck for a smooth transition to all our RHS students!
As we continue to navigate through these uncertain times, we are continuing to work on ways to help support our RHS students and families.
We are currently working on ways to celebrate our senior class. While most of our senior events have unfortunately been cancelled, we are working with the district and looking into ways to hold virtual events and hope to have plans in place soon.
Please continue to check our Grads section on our PTSA website for updates to these events. And seniors, don’t forget about all of the scholarship opportunities available to you, learn more in the College and Career section below.
This can be a difficult time for many and having someone to talk to can help.
Balance in Mind is holding weekly webinars to help both students and parents cope with this ever-changing situation – every Tuesday at 4pm, students can attend the RealTalk for Teens webinar while parents can attend the ParentChat meetings every Wednesday at 7:30pm.

LWSD HONORS SENIORS WITH #BeTheLight
On Friday, April 17, Lake Washington School District, like many school districts across the state of Washington, turned on our high school stadium lights at 8:20 p.m. (20:20 military time) for 20 minutes in a symbolic gesture to honor the graduating class of 2020.
Thank you to our RHS administration and the district for looking for ways to continue to honor and support our seniors!

COFFEE WITH THE PRINCIPAL
Thank you to all who responded to our recent RHS 2020 Vision Survey. Many of you expressed interest in "Coffee with the Principal." Given our current educational modifications, perhaps more than ever, the results of this survey are critical to put into action. Because we cannot come together in a physical location, we will collect your questions for Principal VanderVeer, which she will respond to in a recorded response. Please click the button below to submit your questions.

THANK YOU PANTRY PACK DONORS
Thank you to the donors who are helping with the supplemental foods RHS is providing as part of the LW Schools Foundation Pantry Packs program. RHS Program Coordinators have been humbled and amazed by the generosity of our community during this time. They are adding more families with need each week and assume this will continue give the economic situation from the COVID-19 virus.
RHS & RHS PTSA are committed to helping our families throughout the closure and could not do it without the work of everyone!
Thank you so much for all your help and support.

CELEBRATE EARTH DAY
Next week is Earth Week with Wednesday, April 22 being the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day. With school buildings and grounds closed it is not possible to celebrate at school but we can celebrate at home, especially with the wonderful weather our are has experienced lately.
To engage your families, how about trying a simple project such as food waste surveys to figure out the amount of compostable items are going into the trash rather than compost bin or creating fun art with any recyclables found in your recycle or trash bin. To find more wonderful ideas take a look at Earthday's website.
RHS is doing it’s part by participating in King County Green Schools program. Our school has met Level 3 Green School. This means the school has met a certain percentage of overall conservation in 3 categories:
- Level 1: Waste reduction and recycling
- Level 2: Energy Conservation
- Level 3: Water conservation and pollution prevention.
More information on the program can be found at King County's website below.
RHS community, please take care of your health and be aware of your immediate environment. What change(s) can you make to improve your carbon footprint? Earth Day is everyday, and anywhere you are. Join Earthday for an all day digital event on Wednesday, April 22.

RHS GREEN TEAM UPDATE
This week RHS Green Team is focusing on composting and recycling.
Did you know during lunch RHS cafeteria has a recycling and composting program? The Green Team and AP Environmental Science class collaborate to take a daily shift after B lunch to separate non-compostable items into trash or recycle and take the compost to the back of school where compost collection bins are staged for pickup from Waste Management.
This is a huge commitment by our participating students. RHS Green Team has been a strong leader in LWSD in composting.
The Puget Sound area is very fortunate to have an area wide composting program with Cedar Grove. Their facilities are a few of the largest in the world.
Take a look at this six minute video which shares the entire composting process at their Everett facility.
|
|
Recycling is very important at RHS too.
All classrooms have small recycle bins which are emptied by RHS Green Team weekly into large recycle bins located in each wing of the school. It is the goal of RHS Green Team and PTSA to rid the school of all single use containers. One of the largest single use items at the school are plastic water bottles. This can be easily remedied if all students brought their own water bottles to school and refilled throughout the day.
RHS PTSA is working to add water bottle fillers throughout the school in the future which will make it much easier for students to easily access water throughout the day.
For more information on recycling programs in our Redmond area please
take a look at Waste Management’s guidelines for the Redmond area by clicking the button below.

Green Team's latest article regarding recycling and composting by clicking the button below.

RETHINK YARD CARE AND OUR FOODPRINT
Earth Day is April 22nd. RHS PTSA and Green Team and other student groups had plans to celebrate the 50th Anniversary in a big way. Since schools are closed and life has slowed down, this is an opportunity to share tips and information with RHS families with the focus on how we can RETHINK our impact on the world around us. With help from King County Solid Waste Division and Earthday.org, there are many ways that we can Take Action. Please be sure to read our Green Teams article on Reducing Carbon Footprint by rethinking the way we eat.
NATURAL YARD CARE:
The Spring season is here and many of us are thinking about reviving our lawns, flower beds and vegetable gardens. King County SWD provides 5 steps to natural yard care that save money and time, and protect our families’ health and the environment. Earth Day’s Take Action is to plant a pollinator garden to help sustain the planet’s ecosystem.
|
|
OUR FOODPRINT:
Visits to the grocery store may be limited at this time so here are tips on buying, storing and using food wisely. King County SWD shares ways to best store food in the fridge (Smart Prep); defines what “Best if Used-By” means (Smart Storage); and provides recipes for using up leftovers (Smart Saving). To find out your FoodPrint, check out Earth Day’s FoodPrints campaign and have your family take this Quiz.
