Black Student Union Members from Garden Grove High Find Their Voice and Purpose

After re-activing the Black Student Union at Garden Grove High, the student founders have transferred their activism to the community.

In 2018, senior Jesse Payton became inspired to bring the Black Student Union (BSU) back to life at Garden Grove High School. In the 1990s the school had a BSU, but it was disbanded after the class of 1996 graduated.

At school, Payton saw several culture clubs, including Latinos Unidos, Vietnamese Student Association and Korean Culture Club. There were Black students at school, but no club of their own.

In 2019, a racist incident at school prompted the club's biggest event.

While the majority of Orange County's arts and culture organizations and venues remain physically closed; virtual/streaming offerings are thriving, and some outdoor venues are beginning their phased re-openings. Arts Orange County is pleased to combine its recommendations for online enrichment with some good news about places you can now visit personally. ArtsOC and Voice of OC continue to urge everyone to follow the State and County's current guidelines on distancing and masking as they venture out.
