Dear Friend,

This week, we’re excited to share a video of a very special evening, our second annual presentation of The Legacy Project, which took place last November on the mainstage at PBD and was recorded live.

The Legacy Project, as many of you are aware, is a powerful intergenerational digital storytelling initiative done in collaboration with Compass Community Center, the largest LGBTQ+ community center in the Southeast United States. The purpose of the project is to pass down the stories of older members of the LGBTQ+ community, so that today’s teens and future generations will be aware of their predecessors’ struggles, triumphs, and fights for equality.

Participants in the Compass Youth Program conduct one-on-one interviews with LGBTQ+ trailblazers and preserve their recollections on video. The young videographers then create individual digital stories enhanced by photographs, music, and voiceover, and the results are presented in front of an enthusiastic audience. This 2019 video features the moving and compelling stories of Toni Armstrong Jr., Rolando Chang Barrero, Charlie Frederickson, and Dan Hall.

We’re very proud of our partnership with Compass, located in Lake Worth Beach, one of the most respected community centers of its kind in the nation. Its mission is to diminish stereotypes by challenging long-standing misconceptions about the character of the LGBTQ+ community by acting as an educator, advocate, health service provider, and focal point for community organizing. Its youth program (for ages 12-18) has provided a safe space for more than 25 years, enabling participants to engage in social support, community service, arts and cultural activities, and leadership opportunities.

Stay safe!
