The Readings for this Sunday
Proper 23 Track 2
Our first reading is the story of the cure of Naaman from his leprosy. Naaman, commander of the army of Syria, learns there is a prophet in Israel who might bring about his healing. The king of Israel regards the request for help as a trick in a plot to cause a quarrel. Naaman himself at first refuses to trust in what the prophet Elisha tells him to do, but then he is made clean and knows there is no God on earth except in Israel.
This psalm is an outpouring of praise for the majesty and graciousness of the Lord, who redeems the people of God.
In this reading Paul bids Timothy to be a faithful worker, reminding himself and others of Jesus’ resurrection and the new life that is to be known with him. Although Paul is shut up in prison, the gospel is free in the world. The apostle reflects on his own sufferings and encourages his younger associate in his role of leadership. Especially should he warn his people to avoid disputes over words. The verses which begin, “If we have died with him, we will also live with him,” seem part of an early Christian hymn.
In the gospel story Jesus’ command brings about the cleansing of ten lepers, but only one, a Samaritan, returns to give thanks. Jesus is on the way to his destiny in Jerusalem. The narrative illustrates the power of the reign of God to give a new lease on life. The lepers, who were formerly outcasts, would not be allowed to return home. But only a despised Samaritan recognizes that a life of gratitude and faith is now possible. Physical healing is but a first step. He becomes whole and finds salvation.

Partner with us for ministry

Your gift to St. Hugh's makes a difference. It allows us to be open so that "
all who seek God here may find God, and be filled with God's joy and peace."
It is always the right time. Donate to the mission and ministry of St. Hugh's. Your gifts--of time, talent, and treasure--make it possible to be present in Idyllwild so that we can both invite and then "enable questioning, open-minded people to discover for themselves, the significance of Jesus Christ."
