SPECIAL PRESENTATION via ZOOM
Wednesday, July 15th at 7:00pm
It is the shortest of the letters which Paul undisputedly wrote - only 25 verses. It is essentially personal correspondence - not written to a church community like the ones at Rome or Corinth but written to one Christian household. It seems to center on an essentially social issue found in antiquity - how should Philemon (a Christian slave holder) deal with a runaway slave (Onesimus - a recently converted Christian). Nonetheless, this little letter provides for Paul as he writes from imprisonment an opportunity to articulate the power of the gospel to touch human lives and alter the fundamental structures of society.
By a close reading of the
letter to Philemon in the context of Paul's writings and the world in which he lived, this short presentation will ask us to listen to Paul as he speaks to us today.
LLOYD ALEXANDER ("TONY") LEWIS is Professor of New Testament Emeritus at Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria, Virginia and a priest of the Diocese of Long Island. In his teaching and writing, he has maintained a lively interest in the place of Holy Scripture in worship and daily life.
