ILLUMINATED FRENCH BOOK OF HOURS
Late 18th Century. Octavo, unpaginated; Bound in a custom ox-blood morocco binding, with an elaborate ducal seal on the center of each board, three plain rules along edges, flowers at corners, paneled spines with gilt titling and tooling; mild rubbing and wear to boards, including some scratches; fabric-backed marbled endpaper, pastedowns with elaborate gilt borders of matching flowers from boards, sunflower in each corner; all edges of text block gilt; very mild fingerprinting and wear within; armorial bookplate to front pastedown; This unique book contains 119 hand-written pages, of which 62 have some gilt illumination. The chapter headings are elaborately hand-painted and embellished with gilt, as well as simpler cartouches with large gilt pieces at the end of sections. Some paragraphs have illuminated gilt initials.
