Associate Professor Jerry Crawford  was a guest on Chicago WBEZ 91.5's Morning Shift.​ Host  Jenn White asked Crawford to be on a panel to discuss  Beyonce 's Netflix Documentary, 'Homecoming', a tribute to HBCUs. The Morning Shift's focus was on HBCU alumni and how their colleges shaped who they are today and the struggles HBCUs across the country face right now, for enrollment, staying viable and possible solutions to these challenges. Research, Publications and Presentations
Professor Chuck Marsh ’s paper “The Five R’s of Public Relations: Reciprocity, Reputation, Relationships, Resources – and Reading” has been accepted for presentation at the ninth annual International Critical Public Relations Conference in Barcelona in July.
Undergraduate Research Symposium
Associate Professor Genelle Belmas and her first-year emerging legal scholar and mentee Brandy Gomez (right) attended the 2019 Undergraduate Research Symposium on April 27, where Gomez presented their joint research, “‘No Damn Flag:’ What Vietnam-Era Flag Desecration Cases Mean Today.” Brandy analyzed more than 80 such cases with help from Belmas and JD/Ph.D. student Harrison Rosenthal and presented the findings.

J-School students compete in Adobe Creative Club XD Creative Jam
JSchoolTech had two student teams participate in the Adobe Creative Club XD Creative Jam, in which 14 university Adobe Creative Clubs competed in a 48-hour XD design-athon beginning April 26 and ending April 28. Competitors joined virtually on Friday and listened to a motivational intro by XD Evangelist Howard Pinksy, who also presented the challenge's creative brief. Next, students had an XD training overview from Adobe's head XD designer. Then teams had 48 hours to complete the challenge. Adobe judges selected winners before teams were scheduled to meet again this evening to hear winning teams present their designs. JTech student teams were:

  • Team A: Heidi MeyersNicole Mitchell and Maryln Heger
  • Team B: Sheyenne Denton and Christian Toth​

On Oct. 25, the J-School will be one of the on-site locations for the Adobe Creative Jam, which will be in conjunction with J-School Generations.
Strategic Campaigns presentations
Strategic Campaigns classes will make presentations to their clients starting tomorrow:

  • Group 1 will present to its client, the University of Kansas Army ROTC at 2:30 p.m. on April 30 in the Clarkson Gallery
  • Groups 2, 3, and 4 will present to their client, the U.S. Army National Simulation Center, at 2:30 p.m. on May 9 in the Clarkson Gallery

Judges needed for Kansas Scholastic Press Association contest May 4
The Kansas high school state journalism contest is quickly approaching, and on-site judges are needed. Volunteer a couple of hours on Saturday, May 4, at the Kansas Union to give feedback to high school journalists. J-School students also are encouraged to help. Entries must be judged that afternoon. Diversity & You contest winners
Diversity & You contest winners' entries are now posted on the J-School website . The first place winner in the photo category is Lourdes Kalusha-Aguirre (left), a sophomore majoring in film and media studies and minoring in journalism. Her series of photos depicts the degree to which sculptures on campus reflect today's student body. The first place winner in the video category is Angel Tran (below), a senior in news and information who graduates in May. Her video focuses on her developing perspective of diversity growing up in both Vietnamese and American cultures.
Jayhawk Impact Awards
Two J-School students were honored last week at the Jayhawk Impact Awards. Thomas O'Hara and Angel Tran were selected as Tradition of Excellence recipients. The award recognizes students who uphold the prestige and history of the students who came before them and who wish to continue carving a path of distinction for the future.
Events
Students and faculty are invited to a brown bag lunch presentation at noon on May 1 in Stauffer-Flint Hall, Room 303. Danny Kaprielian , a representative from Qualtrics, will discuss services for researchers, including additional (paid) options, such as panel samples of ethnic minorities and audiences of various media.

The Kansas Association of Broadcasters and Missouri Broadcasters Association annual Sports Seminar is May 7 from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m .  The afternoon will include the presentation of the Hod Humiston Award, roundtable topics, a presentation from Sporting Kansas City announcers and staff, and a tour of one of the top professional sports venues in the country. Registration is $10 for members and $15 for non-members and is due May 2. Learn more here.

The 32nd annual Media & the Law Seminar: Let The Games Begin! is May 2 from 4 to 5:45 p.m. and May 3 from 8 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. at Sheraton Kansas City Hotel at Crown Center in Kansas City, Missouri. Explore the impact of issues surrounding media, sports and entertainment and how lawyers, journalists and the courts should respond. Learn more and register here.
Monday Movie Nights
The JOUR 201: Journalism in the Movies class is hosting journalism movie night on Mondays during the spring semester. The scheduled showing for tonight has been canceled, but the last movie of the semester is "All the President's Men" at 6:30 p.m. May 6 in Room 100, Stauffer-Flint Hall. All are welcome.

Contests, Awards and Scholarships
 Ike’s Soldiers, a program that honors Dwight D. Eisenhower’s legacy through the compelling stories of the soldiers he led, is looking for students to gather and share these stories with the world through IKEducation programs and digital media platforms. Participants are asked to capture and edit videos according to the Eisenhower Foundation’s guidelines. For every interview that is submitted according to the guidelines, the Eisenhower Foundation will grant $50 to the student who conducted and produced the interview. Learn more here.

Through the support of Toyota Motor Sales USA, the Outdoor Writers Association of America is offering scholarships to qualifying college students to attend the OWAA conference June 22-24 in Little Rock, Arkansas. Learn more here.
Alumni Update
Marissa Stephenson , a 2007 J-School graduate, visited (via FaceTime) Associate Professor Carol Holstead 's magazine writing class to talk about her career and her process for writing a cover story for Men's Journal on J ason Mamoa , also knows as Aquaman. Stephenson is a freelance writer and editor-at-large for Runner's World magazine. She has worked in editorial positions at Shape, Self and Men's Journal, in addition to Runner's World.

Nikki Wentling , 2014 J-School graduate, has been promoted to national reporter at Stars and Stripes in Washington, D.C.

Sara Kruger 2018 J-School graduate, is assistant director, philanthropic resources, at MD Anderson Cancer Center.

Lexanna Sims , 2018 J-School graduate is a producer at WVTM-TV in Columbus, Georgia.
