LETTER FROM OUR PRINCIPAL
Dear Payton Parents,

We have turned the corner into the home stretch of the school year, with many activities and notations occurring: we are working through budgeting and programming for next year (thank you for guiding your child through the discussions of the courses s/he may enjoy), P/SAT examinations were taken by students, athletic and academic teams are fully engaged, dozens of students and teachers recently travelled as part of our Payton Global Connections program, AP testing will occur shortly, we are working with the incoming freshmen and their families to ensure their transition into Payton is exciting and smooth, and on and on.  This is in addition to, and much of it is because of the activities that occur in our classrooms on a daily basis, the student's commitment to their growth, the comradery of students and faculty, the faculty's liberal sharing of their time and talents, and the ongoing support (at home and at school) of you...our parents...of Payton's purposes.

Amidst all of it, complex emotions arise, particularly in knowing that our seniors, whom we love and have had a hand in nurturing throughout the past 3 ¾ years, will soon be departing Payton to seek the next evolutions of themselves.  It is this time of year when they make their college selections, and it is so good to hear their excitement for the upcoming undergraduate experiences.  This is paused by knowing that they won't be in our environs on a daily basis, but thus is the life of a school.  Yes.  The class of 2019 will be matriculating into some exceptional schools and many have scholarship dollars available to make the undergraduate experience more plausible, but what is most exciting is to hear the students talk about the plans they are making for when they arrive to their new campuses-courses and majors they plan to take, clubs and activities they plan to start or join, travel programs, professors with whom they plan to conduct research, etc.  They are well-positioned for the next endeavors.  We are excited for them!

We are so fortunate to be part of this remarkable community.  Thank you for all that you do to make it so.

Go Grizzlies,

Tim

STUDENT ENGAGEMENT
I know I need to talk to my kid(s) about race, but where do I begin?

This was the title of the powerful Payton parent panel that happened on Wednesday, April 25th. It was the 4th We are Payton Parents panel this year and it was powerful! This panel would not have been a success without the following Payton parents - Jill Attkisson, Susannah Gottlieb, Tasha Innis, Forrest Moore, and Maraliz Salgado. I cannot thank you enough for your wisdom, vulnerability, and honesty! I also would like to thank Brené Brown! No, she was not there, but I played a clip from her recent Netflix special, "Call to Courage", to kick things off. In addition to sharing words of wisdom about parenting, they also field some powerful questions from the audience.
  • How do you make the conversations urgent and relevant to white boys and not just something "out there"?
  • How do you introduce cultural responsiveness in the classroom?
  • Do you have direct conversations about it (race) early on -- or is it more of an overall ethos?
  • How do we talk about systemic racism when we are a family with kids in Selective Enrollment High Schools, [which] perpetuate racism and segregation in the city...?
  • Why can black people use the "N" word?
  • How do all white people experience skin privilege, despite their other oppressive/marginalized identities?
  • How can city hall tap young people to help challenge every institution to change?
  • What are your thoughts about cultural appropriation? My white son only listens to hip hop/rap (e.g, Kendrick Lamar) and I've tried to engage him in discussing the lyrics with me, but there are some uncomfortable moment with the language (e.g., "N" word) that his young brother hears, but doesn't understand the context.
  • What do you think of "Blackish"?
Like I said, it was a powerful night!

One thing that was clear throughout the night, is that people of color cannot opt-out of conversations about race. As Brené Brown stated, the ability to opt out is "the definition of privilege".  What would it look like if all committed to not opting out of these conversations with our kids? What would it look like to move from appreciating the diversity at Payton to embracing it?

Finally, I want to share some resources that were mentioned last night.
We are different. We are one. We are Payton.

As always, feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns at [email protected].

Students climbed up the Great Wall in Beijing and got lost in the real-world fairy tale landscapes of the Dujiangyan Irrigation Park in Chengdu.

Rome Trip
The Senior Latin students had an enriching, fun, and life-changing trip to Rome and the Bay of Naples. Students read Latin inscriptions on ancient buildings and monuments from the 1st century AD. The student itinerary included a tour of Pompeii, a visit to Ostia Antica, and trips to the Colosseum, Vatican and Sistine Chapel, the Pantheon, the Roman Forum, the Circus Maximus, the crypts and tombs of ancient Romans, the Baths of Caracalla, the Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps, and the Villa Borghese. They even climbed to the top of a volcano!

Payton Girls Badminton Team celebrates their City Championship!

The Payton Girls Badminton team had a very successful 2nd season: undefeated!   They are 6-0 in conference having won matches against Northside, Mather, Taft,  Roosevelt, Schurz and Amundsen with an additional non-conference win against Back of the  Yards. The Varsity starting line-up is 29-1 in conference play. Playing singles are Isabel  Kapustka (soph), Vicky Chen (soph) and Bessie Zhang (SR) and playing doubles are Norah Moran  (soph), Kate Ariathurai (soph), Julia Gershberg (frosh), Lillian Kibby (frosh), Costanza Siniscalchi (JR),  Tyler Yuen (JR) and Lucia Nash (JR). The team is coached by Aisha Khan and JP Belanger.  Congratulations Raquettes!!

Girls Lacrosse
Varsity Girls continue their strong 5-1 season, with a great crowd coming out to support them against Northside. Come watch the LAX girls take on rival Lane Tech at 5:30pm on May 9 at Winnemac Stadium.

Varsity Girls Lacrosse takes the field.

The Payton Girls' JV Lacrosse team is 4-1 in their Conference and continues to dominate their opponents.   Having beaten Jones, Whitney Young, Northside and Lincoln Park HS, they are ready to take on Highland Park on Thursday, May 2nd @ 5:45pm. Go Grizzlies!

Payton Girls JV Lacrosse team leaps for a victory.

Boys Lacrosse
Boys Lacrosse continues to hit its stride with a record of 6-2.  Rolling off consecutive wins over Lane Tech, Taft, Lincoln Park, and IC Catholic Prep.  Zach Anderson (SR), Ben Wilen (JR), Teige Burke (SR), Letandre Stenneth (SR), Louis Taiber (JR), & Nino McGowan (SR) continue to show great leadership, scoring prowess, and intimidating play.
Boys Lacrosse Team in Action

Track
Boys Track had their first meet of the season on March 30th at Lane Tech. This was the first outdoor meet of the season. The day was cold and it even snowed! Zach Rose ran the Varsity 3200 Meter race coming in first place with a time of 10:09:74. The team also came in 2nd place on the Boys Varsity 4X800 Relay with a time of 9:09.79.

Zach Rose maintains the lead in the Varsity 3200 Meter for a first place finish.

Ultimate Frisbee
The Payton team had a good showing at this year's Neuqua Valley Knockout Tournament, playing against two traveling teams including Denver East of Colorado and Mounds View of Wisconsin. Due to extreme weather on April 27, other games in the tournament were cancelled, but it was a great tune up for the team as they prepare for conference play. In conference, we will be playing teams from Lane Tech, Pritzker, Evanston and Neuqua Valley leading up to State Championships June 1-2.

Ultimate Frisbee team shows school spirit as they prepare for their next tournament.

Girls and Boys Water Polo
The Girls and Boys Water Polo teams faced early adversity without their home pool, traveling late nights to offsite pools around the city. The teams have wrapped up the regular season and are preparing for CPS Championships and IHSA Sectionals. Both teams open the CPS first round at Jones; the boys are the #2 seed and the girls are #3 seed heading into the IHSA Sectionals. IHSA Sectionals begin May 6 and is annually hosted at UIC's all-deep pool.

On April 25, the Boys Water Polo team honored the seniors at our home pool. It was an emotional event as we have five seniors this year.

More info on schedule and results for the Payton/Jones teams visit: www.eaglesaquatics.org

Girls Soccer
The Varsity girls soccer team (coached by Paul Escobar) started the season on fire, winning 7 of their first 8 games, including reclaiming the Hydrant in their win over Northside.

Varsity Girls Soccer team proudly displaying the hydrant for their win over Northside.

Their only loss being a hard fought 1-0 battle vs archrival Lane. A combination of school trips, Spring Break and injuries has hampered lineup continuity and finds the girls in a bit of a winless streak, their current record sitting at 7-5-2 heading into the CPS playoffs beginning Mon, 4/29.

Coach Escobar, along with co-captains Maddie Clerkin and Mimi Hamada, has developed a scrappy squad that none of their opponents enjoy playing against. Some of the new Freshmen have stepped up and made solid contributions as well.  The girls will look to get back on the winning side and make a deep run in the city playoffs next week, followed by the IHSA state playoffs.

JV Girls celebrate their sunset win over Jones!

The JV Girls Soccer team is having a productive spring, currently 5 - 2 in the CPS Premier Division.  JV Girls Soccer enjoying a beautiful sunset following a 5 - 1 WIN over rival Jones! Go Grizzlies!

Boys Baseball
The Grizzly Varsity baseball team is closing April strong, with an overall record of 11-4, 7-0 in  conference so far. As we finish April and head to May, the team is using the conference season to  prepare for a strong postseason run.

JV has had a frustrating year with weather so far, but have made the most of their opportunities, going  undefeated 7-0-1 and 5-0 in conference.

Scoring run for a close JV Ballgame.

Boys Baseball Spring Trip to the Dominican Republic
20 members of the Varsity and JV teams had a memorable Spring Break as the team flew together to the  Dominican Republic to attend Dominican Baseball Camp and participate in service projects.   Most  memorably, the team spent an afternoon playing with kids at an orphanage and another afternoon  painting two homes in a local village.

Left: Painting houses in a local village. Right: Hanging out with the kids at an orphanage.

Left: Grizzly swag was distributed and appreciated at every stop during  the trip. Right: Practice at CUBS Latin facility.

The Grizzlies  played 4 games against many future pros in a variety of venues from pro to a neighborhood park in a  town known as the Cradle of Shortstops, San Pedro de Mecoris. We spent a practice getting drilled by  the Kansas City Royals Latin America staff and another day drilling at the Cubs Latin facility.

Sailing
The Payton sailing team finished first in A fleet and third overall at the Midwest Mallory Qualifier, earning a berth at Nationals. They'll be heading to Seattle to compete with the best from across the country. Congrats!
