Dear Members,

How has your artwork changed during the pandemic? Are you spending more time making masks than painting? Are you exploring a new media, taking classes online, experimenting, or trying something new? Or are you like many of us, stuck in a rut, too anxious and worried (and rightly so!) to work.

I've been spending way too much time reading about the pandemic, social injustices, politics and keeping up with all the news that changes every minute, reading major newspapers and listening to NPR many times a day. It's overwhelming!

While it's important to be well informed, it's also important to take care of yourself and spend time doing what you love most, whether that be creating art, gardening or whatever. Try to carve out a chunk of time every day to be creative. Get outside and get some exercise and fresh air. And put aside a tiny chunk of time to read the news. There are online timers and phone timers that can help you limit your time online.

My Fourth of July resolution is to spend less time reading the news online, and more time doing art.

Please join me!

Book Review

How To Be An Artist  by Jerry Saltz is a book I have looked forward to reading since it's publication earlier this year. I think I identify with Saltz because he, too, is what use to be called, "a late bloomer" having been a long distance truck driver previous to his writing career.
He is currently the art critique for New York magazine.

This is a book best read in very small doses. At least that's the way I read it. I needed digestion time between each of the very brief, but to the point, chapters which are often one page but sometimes two. Those chapters that seemed to be aimed at those just starting to identify as artists were still a terrific recap for those of us who have been at this for more than a few decades.

Every chapter had a valid point. Some of the exercises were repetitious for me but still had a logical reason to exist. The idea of rethinking what you know through and through is something we don't do often enough. I know I am speaking for myself but doubt I'm alone in this.

His exercises are helpful and I love when I find an artist I've never heard of pops up as someone who we should all know about and appreciate. You may or not agree with his choice of examples but you will always learn something new wherever you are in your artistic journey.

For my daughter's summer art classes, we've chosen to concentrating on women artists.  The first artist we've looked at is Elizabeth Catlett.  Her art & ideas inspire me.  When asked about her work, Catlett said, "I have always wanted my art to service my people - to reflect us, to relate to us, to stimulate us, to make us aware of our potential.  We have to create an art for liberation and for life."  Elizabeth Catlett was a painter, a printer & a sculptor.  The first 2 images I'm enclosing are pieces I've done directly inspired by Catett's work.  My hope is to incorporate Catlett's bold lines & spirit into my own work. The last piece is a portrait I've done of  Elizabeth.

Black Lives Matter

Dear WCA Members,

To day the WCA Board put out a Black Lives Matter Statement of Support in the WCA newsletter and on the website and social media. The statement is only our first step and we plan to take action. Going forward, I will be working on social activist initiatives with the national board to build more equity within WCA across all disciplines and at all levels. I encourage your chapters to do the same! Here is the statement from the WCA Board...

Black Lives Matter
The Women's Caucus for Art strongly supports Black Lives Matter and we stand with those protesting against racism with non-violent actions. We support the fight for justice for George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, Sean Reed, Tony McDade, and countless others who have been killed by the police and white vigilantes. We will say their names.

WCA is an inclusive member organization unique in its multidisciplinary, multicultural membership of art professionals. Our organization is committed to the growth and exploration of art for social activism and transformation.

Black Lives Matter. Join us in rededicating ourselves to knowing our racial past and creating change now to ensure a transformative future through artistic expression, engagement, and education. The status quo cannot stand.

A few chapters are working on their own initiatives and projects...
* The DC chapter issued their own statement and they are inviting WCA members to submit artwork for a juried online exhibition entitled See My Color, WCADC's Social Justice Art Exhibition. Proceeds from this exhibit's entry fees will fund an Art Scholarship to a woman-identifying Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) Art student.

* The Philadelphia chapter has organized a virtual BLM Exhibition. More details at

* The Northern California chapter will be highlighting 27 Black Women in the Arts throughout 2020 in honor of Breonna Taylor with their "Black Women in the Arts Matter" project.
WCA's mission is to create community through art, education, and social activism. We are committed to advocating for equity in the arts for all. If you have a project or initiative your chapter is working on, please make sure to share it with our members in the monthly newsletter PULSE. We would love to hear what you are doing!
