Finding Joy in Emptiness
It was a little over a week ago that we celebrated Easter. For children, Easter celebrations often include egg hunts and baskets filled with candies and toys. This year was no exception for my kids. As they stood in the driveway looking out over the yard at all the eggs, I could see the smiles coming to their faces as they imagined the goodies they would find in the eggs. However, that joy and excitement soon changed to disappointment. Some of the eggs they found were empty after the wind had blown them around and sent stickers and parts of eggs flying away. My children expected to find treats in the eggs, but instead there was nothing. How disappointing! There is no joy in an empty Easter egg!

The women coming to Jesus' tomb on that first Easter morning so long ago also encountered emptiness. They expected to find Jesus' body, but instead found an empty tomb with their Lord gone. We read in Mark 16:6 that the angel told the women, "Don't be alarmed. You are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here!" Instead of disappointment, this emptiness brought about the greatest joy possible and the sweetest surprise we could have ever hoped for. The tomb was empty because Jesus had risen. He had conquered sin, death, and the devil by His rising. In life, there will be many times we may feel the emptiness of broken relationships, disappointments in our circumstances, or financial or health struggles. But I pray we will be able to turn to the joy we have knowing Christ has conquered all of these, and we have the hope of life eternal with Him because of the empty tomb.
