Public Comments During the COVID-19 Emergency

As several public meetings are set to occur over the coming weeks, some virtually, to help reduce the spread of the coronavirus, the City encourages members of the public to submit their comments in advance.

Governor Newsom’s executive order permits members of the Coronado City Council/Successor Agency, City Boards, Commission and Committees and staff to participate in public meetings via teleconference.

If you wish to register your position on an agenda item without attending, you may do so using one of two forms on the City's website. Please submit your comment no later than 2 hours before the start of the meeting. Written comments will be posted on the City's website in lieu of being read aloud at the meeting.
Board, Commissions, Committees

The next few meetings include the Historic Resource Commission meeting set for 3 p.m. on Wednesday, April 15, and the Design Review Commission meeting at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, April 22. The agenda for the Design Review Commission has not yet been published.

Commissioners will be using an internet-based meeting app that allows them to participate without being physically present. Each meeting will be shown live on Coronado TV (Spectrum 19/AT&T 99) or on the City's website.

The City Council will next meet on Tuesday, April 21. If you wish to register your position on a City Council agenda item without attending the meeting in person, you may do so using the form below. Please submit your comment no later than 2 p.m. on the day of the Council Meeting.

The City Council meets every first and third Tuesday of the month. All comments received from the public will be made part of the record of the meeting. Please note that this form is defined as a public record under the California Public Records Act and is therefore subject to public disclosure upon request.

The agenda for the April 21 meeting is published Thursday, April 16.
Restaurant Pick-up Zones Established

The City Council directed staff at its April 7 meeting to establish curbside restaurant pick-up locations on Orange Avenue to help local businesses that can no longer offer sit-down dining and are suffering a significant decline in sales.

Due to County public health orders, some Coronado restaurants have transitioned to providing pick-up and delivery to continue operating. As a complement to suspending parking enforcement on Orange Avenue, pick-up zones for customer and delivery driver pick-up can make it easier to access restaurants and encourage ordering.

Coronado is home to approximately 80 restaurants, most of whom have either closed or substantially reduced their business. A large number of businesses on Orange Avenue have temporarily closed while pedestrian traffic is nearly nonexistent as the community observes the Governor’s stay at home executive order.

Curbside pick-up locations were established for the following restaurants who made a request: Garage Buona Forchetta; Burger Lounge; High Tide Bottle Shop & Kitchen; Little Frenchie Bistro & Wine Bar; Starbucks; Swaddee Thai Restaurant of Coronado; Villa Nueva Bakery Cafe; and Yummy Sushi. The zones have been posted with signs and are just outside of the restaurant.
Free eBooks with Cloud Library

The Coronado Public Library remains closed until further notice. However, the Library has just joined a new service that will provide patrons with even more eBooks and eAudio items.

This week, the Library became a part of Cloud Link, a cooperative eBook sharing project with other libraries, operated by Cloud Library. Patrons can still get Overdrive content in the usual way, which has about 20,000 available titles.

Now, however, patrons will have an additional and expanded choice of eBook and eAudio items by clicking on the Cloud Library link on our homepage, or the link below, or downloading the Cloud Library by Bibliotheca app from any app store.

Once the app is downloaded, follow the simple steps to select “Coronado Public Library.” The Cloud Link has a warehouse of 147,000 titles, although actual availability will vary depending on demand.

ART GOES ON
'Celebrating Coronado Artists' Banner Series
The Orange Avenue Banner Program displays colorful, artistic banners on the Orange Avenue corridor from First Street to Avenida de las Arenas.

The fourth in the Coronado Cultural Arts Commission’s annual series, “Celebrating Coronado Artists,” is now on display for the spring.

Initiated in 2016, the banner program is funded by Discover Coronado and infuses local art, color, history and information throughout the City, creating a beautiful and vibrant downtown that directly impacts the core businesses.

Discover Coronado Chair and Hotel del Coronado General Manager Harold Rapoza said. “I’m very proud that my fellow board members have extended funding for the banner program through June 2022.”

This year, the artists series is especially meaningful during the pandemic as locals drive down Orange Avenue to do essential shopping or pickup meals at local restaurants. The banners are a reminder of the creative community of artists that reside in Coronado and how much the banners make Coronado a welcoming place, especially now.

The popular “Celebrating Coronado Artists” series has been part of the program since 2017. Each year, 15 artists are selected through a jury process to display a banner of their artwork for two consecutive years.
