Position Open: Program Analyst with the US Coast Guard

The Coast Guard recently published a solicitation for a Program Analyst, GS-0343-14 position in the Mobility and Ice Operations Division (CG-WWM-3), Office of Waterways and Ocean Policy (CG-WWM) Branch, Marine Transportation System Directorate (CG-5PW), Assistant Commandant for Prevention Policy, Deputy Commandant for Operations, Washington, DC. This vacancy is open to merit promotion candidates (current/former eligible civilian employees and military members with 3 years of consecutive service) and closes July 19, 2021. Specialized experience includes: Leveraging analytics to accomplish statistical research or business results; modifying data and managing databases to improve techniques; developing and delivering detailed internal briefings, executive-level briefings, and briefings to other agencies; knowledge/understanding of domestic icebreaking missions and/or Coast Guard waterways management/ maritime transportation system activities; serving as a research liaison for federal, state, local agencies; analyzing and evaluating the effectiveness of a marine safety program in meeting established goals and objectives.

Chalmers Researchers Heading to Arctic Ocean

At the end of July, a polar research expedition departs from Helsingborg in Sweden. Onboard are Chalmers researchers Amanda Nylund and Anna Lunde Hermansson, who will be investigating changes in the marine Arctic system. ​Amanda Nylund and Anna Lunde Hermansson, researchers at the Department of Mechanics and Maritime Sciences at Chalmers, will study the status of the Arctic ecosystem in an expedition called Synoptic Arctic Survey. In the Swedish part of the journey, 39 researchers from 14 departments will participate, of which six are Swedish universities. It is part of an international expedition where Oden is one of twelve research vessels.

The GN’s department of Family Services is hosting the four-day event with funding provided through the federal government’s Women and Gender Equality Canada department. The forum aims to empower Nunavut’s women and girls using traditional knowledge, skills, and their roles as natural leaders.

2nd Symposium on Polar Microbes and Viruses

Organizers announce, that due to the coronavirus outbreak, the 2nd Symposium on Polar Microbes and Viruses has been postponed to 2022. This symposium will bring together molecular microbial ecologists specializing in different organism groups to share our latest results and discuss methodological problems, as well as future prospects in the field, including practical international collaborations. The environmental focus will be on cryospheric environments including sea ice, glaciers, ice sheets, and permafrost, but excellent research in other polar environments is also invited. The methods to be discussed will focus on 'omics' techniques, ranging from single cells to metagenomes, but research using additional methods is encouraged as well.
