Workshop/Farm Tour: Supporting Pollinators on Your Land

This event is aimed for NPP participants who would like help in selecting perennial flowers and planting sites for their property, as well as anyone who would like the learn how to evaluate the effectiveness of their pollinator gardens. Sarah will provide a tour of the pollinator-friendly flowers we have at the BUF and discuss important considerations in selecting plant varieties and sites, as well as tips for attracting hummingbirds to your yard. In addition, we will observe and catch pollinators and give you some tips on identifying native bees, butterflies and other pollinators.

2D Mixed Media Art with Paula Decker Haynes
Saturday, May 11th
Learn how to use several techniques to complete a finished mixed media piece to hang in your home or give as a gift! Paula Decker Haynes will demonstrate the techniques used in creating 2D mixed media artwork that may also be applied to 3D applications as well. You will layer with inks, paint, gesso, papers, mediums, stencils, stamps, and finish with either a painting that comes out of your background or layer a collage piece you have created from papers adhered to your background.
Provided materials include a masonite board (11"x14¨), papers and ephemera (which will include old book pages, some original papers, scrapbook papers, acrylic paints, gesso, brushes for applying matte medium, and other mediums. Things you will need to bring: any personal ephemera to use in your finished piece, substrate (if you wish to use anything different than the provided 11x14 masonite board). Cost is $60.

Using pastel chalk and colored paper on sanded toned paper, Diana Colgate teaches basic pastel technique to create miniature and landscape paintings. Suitable for both the newcomer and the experienced artist, the class will be surprised what they can create in this fun half-day workshop. In this relaxed environment, each class member will leave with both a 2.5" x 3.5" and a 4" x 5" work of art. The cost of materials is included in the price of the course.
Note: As soft pastels create dust, participants who have breathing problems may need to bring a face mask or take their needs into consideration. Cost is $80.

8th International Exhibition of Scratchboard Art

An International exhibit opens, a two-day scratchboard conference will be held, and exciting demonstrations by talented artists working with wood will be happening throughout the month of May at the Kentucky Artisan Center.
The Kentucky Artisan Center is proud to announce their first International exhibition to be on display in the Center's main gallery. The "8th International Exhibition of Scratchboard Art" opens May 17, with an open to the public reception from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. at the Center. Artists are members of the International Society of Scratchboard Artists, (ISSA) and the opening reception will include awards
given to members and Master Level artists exhibiting.
On display May 17 - July 31, 2019, this International exhibit includes works by 51 artists from all over the United States, Canada, Switzerland, Australia, Germany, New Zealand, China and Portugal.
Many of these scratchboard works appear to be high-resolution photographs, fooling the observer upon first encounter. The level of artistry in this exhibit is extraordinary, especially in the works by Master Level member artists. The Center is pleased to host the annual ISSA conference on May 18 and 19.
The Great Kentucky Cover Up

Showcasing quilts from artists across the Commonwealth, the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea announced its latest exhibit, The Great Kentucky Cover Up, on display now through May 6, 2019 at the Center. The exhibit features work from artists Glenna Blakely, of Harlan, Brenda Plaster, of Lawrenceburg, Janet Serrenho of Lexington, and Karen Witt of Lexington.
The creation of quilts is the result of mankind's frugality, need for warmth and beauty. Quilted fabrics have
been found in China, Europe and numerous other cultures throughout the world. In early American
c
olonial days, fabric came by ship from Europe and was scarce. When cloth wore out, it was folded, cut, altered and used again and again.
Quilting is a process of layering fabric, where a padding or batting is sandwiched in between the fabric layers. This composite is then stitched together, often with a decorative or ornate top to form a quilt.
Quilting requires endless hours of stitching and patchwork quilting developed numerous patterns, especially in the 1700s and in the Southern Appalachians. Quilt patterns were inspired by objects in daily life and often were handed down fro
m one generation to another.
Quilting today has reached the realm of fine art. Contemporary quilters utilize a vast array of fabrics, complicated techniques and often personal narratives to their work. This exhibit includes traditional quilt patterns such as "Lone Star" and "Hunter Star" by Glenna Blakley as well as contemporary themed quilts like "Third Mesa" by Janet Serrenho, which depicts colorful images from the South-west.
Reveal: Large 2-D Works
(March 16, 2019 - June 16, 2019)
The Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea announces the exhibit Reveal, showcasing the work of Sabra L. Crockett, Damon Farmer, Felipe Molina and Robbie Mueller. This exhibit will run March 16 - June 16, 2019, in the Center's lobby and foyer. All four artists work in large two-dimensional formats.
Originally from Rochester, New York, Sabra L. Crockett has lived in numerous locations throughout the south before finding her home in Louisville, Kentucky. There she enjoys being surrounded by beautiful songbirds and a spectacular variety of trees.
"I am fascinated by nature. It has a secret language that I try to decipher. There is a feeling I get when observing the birds, animals, and trees - a feeling that I am experiencing something that is so familiar, and yet so extraordinary," she states. "I have been visiting one of the largest and oldest Ginko trees in Louisville for many years now and the painting in this exhibit is the first in a series about this tree."

Cottonwood Bark Carvings Created by William Rogers
Working almost entirely with cottonwood bark, Rogers found his creative outlet after a 30-year career with IBM. The Montana and Alaskan cottonwood bark that he uses has been harvested from dead trees whose bark has fallen to the ground. All of Rogers' carvings are original, and because no two pieces of bark are alike, none of his carvings are exactly alike.

Jamie Donaldson Turns Wood on the Lathe
Donaldson is active in both regional and national woodturning associations and is in demand as a demonstrator. His works often are asymmetrical and he enjoys using unusual sections of wood including the bark. Donaldson often utilizes various stains to bring out the natural character of the woods he turns on the lathe.

Designer Baskets created by Derek Downing
Downing began designing and creating his unique baskets in 1986. His designs are based on the traditional egg-basket form and are woven from grapevine, hand-dyed rattan and seagrass, a material less commonly used for woven baskets. The handles of his baskets are crafted from native grapevines.
Downing's baskets are distinctive and many feature vividly colored accents created from the dyes he mixes for his basketry. Visitors at the center can enjoy watching him weave and then select the perfect finished basket.

Kimmerer is a scientist and a member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation who embraces the notion that plants are our oldest teachers. The book intertwines knowledge and perspectives in new ways, celebrating the reciprocal relationship between humans and the natural world.
