Peter Barbosa, PhD, Departs 
Michael J. Trepal, DPM, VP of Academic Affairs and Dean, announced in mid-April the departure of Peter Barbosa, PhD, Professor in Pre-Clinical Sciences, at the end of the month. A member of the faculty since August 2011, Dr. Barbosa "was an educator, mentor, student, advocate, researcher and faculty leader here," he said. Dr. Barbosa has accepted a position at Catholic University in his native Puerto Rico, close to his family. "He will be sorely missed," said Dr. Trepal.

New Agreement Signed Between NYCPM and Polish University
In early April,
Michael J. Trepal, DPM, FACFAS Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean, and
Tomasz Grodzicki, Vice-Rector and Dorota Kłys, Deputy Bursar of Jagiellonian University Medical College in Krakow, Poland, signed a Direct Cultural and Scientific Cooperation Agreement. The agreement "tightens" the scientific cooperation between the two institutions, aiming to develop and maintain cooperation in the fields of podiatry and physical therapy.
The cooperation will include an exchange of clerkships in the summer of 2019, in which 2-3 students from each institution will undertake two- to four-weeks of clinical training at the other. The agreement might also include an exchange of faculty; joint research projects; meetings, seminars and courses on subjects to be determined; exchange of information and scientific publications; and development of cooperation between the institutions' libraries.

Superbones Superwounds East was a podiatric conference for podiatric surgeons, residents and students held in Teaneck, NJ April 5-7. NYCPM faculty were among the presenters.

Dr. Michael Cassano (1984) Dies
PM News
reported the passing of Michael Cassano, DPM ('84), on April 12. According to Gary Stones, DPM ('84), Cassano was a longtime member of the Nassau County Podiatric Medical Association, as is his wife, Dr. Maryann Alongi.

Thi Pham (2019) Places 2nd in
APMWA Writing Contest
Thi Pham's (Class of 2019) entry, "Cut the Bread, Not the Bone: Emphasis on Nutrition Education for Both Patient and Provider," placed second in the American Podiatric Medical Writers Association's 33
rd
Annual Student Writing Competition.
Her paper is about the importance of educating both patients and providers.

Dr. Russell Volpe Among US Podiatrists to Lecture in Spain
In early April, Russell G. Volpe, DPM ('83), Professor of Orthopedics and Pediatrics, joined several other US podiatrists and medical specialists who lectured at the 3rd International Seminar on Foot Pathology in Zaragoza, Spain. Dr. Volpe lectured about "Clinical Criteria for the Treatment of Asymptomatic Flatfoot in Children," and "Transverse Plane Foot and Leg Deformities in Children - Diagnosis and Management." He also participated in panel discussions about pediatric podiatry with US podiatrists and Spanish podologists.

Students in Action at Community Events
Don't Walk By (photo above)
was a month-long series of events in February organized by the Rescue Alliance, and served homeless people met on the streets and on subways and invited back to a host site to receive a meal, clothing and other supplies, medical care and additional services. NYCPM students, with faculty supervision, provided foot screenings,
also offering humanitarian support to the many homeless and less fortunate
. They also distributed information at these events.
They are not only screening for pathology, but also offering humanitarian support to the many homeless and less fortunate they see there.
On Saturday, March 30, students represented FCNY and NYCPM at Health First's Community Health Screening at Claremont Neighborhood Center in the Bronx (photo above). The NYCPM students, with faculty supervision, performed foot screenings and distributed information.
