NC 4-H Citizenship Focus

W h e n :   June 10-12, 2019
Ages:  14-18
Register by May 6, 2019



Citizenship Focus is a wonderful opportunity for teens to spend a few days in Raleigh and focus on citizenship and leadership. They will travel and attend this conference together as a county group.

Conference Highlights include:
*Citizenship themed workshop
* Distinguished Speakers
* Visits with elected officials
* Off-site visits in the Raleigh area

The cost is $200.  If you have never attended this event and would like to go there will be a $100 scholarship given to you to attend. The conference is valued at $600 per delegate but the cost you pay is much less thanks to corporate sponsorship from the NC Electric Cooperatives.

If you would like to register to attend or have questions, email [email protected] by May 6. A deposit is needed at the time of registration. Space is limited to 3 teens per county.

NC 4-H Citizenship Focus is limited to youth that are enrolled in Alexander County 4-H Clubs.

4-H Expressive Arts Show

The 4-H Expressive Arts Show will be held Tuesday, May 7th at 6:00 p.m. at N.C. Cooperative Extension-Alexander County Center.  If you have any questions please call 828-632-3125. Items from the Photo and Craft contest will be available for participants to take home after the show.  
4-H Presentations & 
District Activity Day
Youth that were between the ages of 8-18 as of January 1, 2019 can participate in 4-H presentations. Age divisions are as follows: 8-10, 11-13 & 14-18. There are many different categories to choose from to do a presentation on. Each county may enter two participants per age division per category to present at District Activity Day on June 14 in Lincoln County. If you would like to participate in 4-H         Presentations please contact the N.C. Cooperative Extension-Alexander Center by May 7th. Reminder: two acts from the  4-H Talent show will move on to the District Competition that will be held at District Activity Day.

Wake Up to Ag
The annual "Wake Up to Ag" event for all 1st graders will be held Friday, May 10th at H&H Arena in Taylorsville, NC.  This event would not be successful without our volunteers.  If you would like to help with this event please contact the 4-H Office at 828-632-3125 or email DJ at [email protected].



The 2nd Horse Draft Pull will be held at H&H Arena on Saturday, May 11th.  We need volunteers to help with selling lunch.  Proceeds from the food will be donated to Alexander County 4-H.  This is a great opportunity for Alexander 4-H to be out in the community and visible to those that don't know much about 4-H.  Please email DJ at [email protected] for more information or to let him know you can volunteer.  

AIRE
NC 4-H is excited to announce a new format for the State-Level 4-H AIRE Program in 2019. Starting in 2019,
4-H'ers age 11-19 who wish to participate in the State-Level 4-H AIRE Program will need to submit / participate in the following AIRE components: Application, A VIDEO
Interview, Resume and Electronic Video: VE (3-minute   pre-recorded video based on this year's VE question). If you would like more information please contact the N.C.    Cooperative Extension-Alexander County Center. These will be submitted through Google docs and must be submitted by June 10. Do not wait til the last minute to work this is a project that takes some time to complete.

4-H in the News

Home Grown Hearts 4-H Club - will have their next meeting on Friday, May 17th.  The club won a Ice Cream Party for volunteering the most time at the Tractor Supply Booth for the Spring Paper Clover Campaign.  This will be the last meeting before summer break.

Southern Graces 4-H Club m et on April 18, 2019.  They dyed Easter Eggs using natural dyes including red cabbage, onion peels, turmeric, beets, and coffee!  They had a great time and it was neat to see the colors that were made, such as red cabbage looks purple, but dyed the eggs blue!

Whisk It Up 4-H Club held their April meeting at the Cooperative Extension office on Thursday, April 25th.  During the meeting the club members learned how to prepare mini fruit pizzas.  The club also discussed the upcoming Facebook cake auction fundraiser.  The cake auction will be held via 4-H Alexander County Facebook page starting May 22nd at 6:00 p.m. and ending May 23rd at 2:00 p.m. Pickup will be on May 24th from 9:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m at the N.C. Cooperative Extension-Alexander County Center.  Proceeds gathered during the fundraiser will go towards field trip costs for the club members. Our next meeting will be held at the N.C. Cooperative Extension-Alexander County Center demonstration kitchen on May 23rd at 4:00. Everyone is welcome to attend! 
NEW Club!!!!
The Boots and Breeches 4-H Club will begin meeting on Sunday, June 2nd at 2:00 p.m. at Foothills Equestrian Center.  Address:  531 Starnes Lane, Taylorsville, NC 28681  Leaders:  Dana Dewey and Corin Rash
