November 2020
Are you finding natural opportunities to move more each day?
The pandemic has resulted in the loss of some of the usual opportunities for mobilization for many of us, especially older adults. For older adults, deconditioning is becoming a pandemic within the pandemic. This is within your power to change! We challenge you to ask yourself, your colleagues, and your older patients how you can find new opportunities to add more movement to each day.

Moving more during a pandemic may require more creativity. Silly or exaggerated movements like arm circles or over the head waves with both arms when you say hello or goodbye is not only a natural opportunity for movement but a natural opportunity for generating smiles too.

We have developed two patient handouts that support older adults in finding natural opportunities to move more each day: Rx for Physical Activity in Older Adults, and Stretch, Lift, or Tap (SLoT) - How older adults can stay active indoors during the COVID-19 pandemic. The SLoT initiative is funded by the Canadian Frailty Network. Older adults who are interested in trying this resource and providing feedback for our research can email us at [email protected]

Our QI coaches share bright ideas to support people who care for older adults living with frailty, and who want to learn from and inspire others. To share tools and experiences or ask for advice from others, including our QI coaches, join the sfCare Forum or email us.
Embedding sfCare in OHTs as the foundation of care for older adults with frailty
Addressing the unique needs of older adults through specifically tailored approaches across an OHT is key to improving health outcomes. Our sfCare OHT Policy Brief offers guidance on 8 important steps for OHTs to take now.

We encourage all care providers to read the brief and engage with each other and their leadership teams on how care can be improved for older adults. What can you start doing today to improve the health outcomes for older adults who are in your care?
