SCC PROJECT ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEETING WEBINAR

On March 30, 2020, Suffolk Care Collaborative (SCC) held its final Project Advisory
Committee (PAC) meeting via webinar. SCC's executive leadership presented an overview of key program and performance highlights.

In collaboration with contracted network partners, which included Behavioral Health (BH), Community Based Organizations (CBOs), Hospitals, Primary Care (PC) and Skilled Nursing Facilities and included 134 entities with 265 sites and more than 1,600 providers, the SCC operationalized eleven DSRIP projects.

SCC created a summary report, which provides an executive summary and impact summaries of the SCC programs. The report can be found here.

The accomplishments achieved under the DSRIP program would not have been possible without the hard work, support and still ongoing efforts of the SCC's many partners that created the network to improve the health of our population and to bring resources to those most in need.

If you have any questions about the information provided in the report, please email [email protected].

Our heartfelt appreciation and thanks to all of our partners.

ASSOCIATION FOR MENTAL HEALTH AND WELLNESS EXPANDS ITS COVID-19 RESPONSE WITH ENHANCED MENTAL HEALTH HELPLINE AND PEER SUPPORT

The Association for Mental Health and Wellness (MHAW) has increased the capacity of its Mental Health Helpline in response to the overwhelming need resulting from the Coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic.

The Mental Health Helpline is available to all Suffolk County residents who need help in finding and accessing assistance for themselves, for a friend or a family member.  Helpline staff provides information and referrals to community resources for persons living with mental illness, their families and service providers, as well as people in the general population who are experiencing stress and anxiety as a result of the recent pandemic.

When a Helpline call is received, a brief assessment will be conducted with the individual caller so they can be linked to an appropriate resource.  When needed, callers may be provided with additional advocacy through direct phone calls to other service providers to arrange for appropriate services.   A key component of the Helpline is post-call follow-up where Helpline staff will make return calls to individuals by the next day to make sure they successfully connected with mental health services.

The Helpline, which can be accessed by phone at 631-471-7242 ext. 2, is open for calls Monday through Friday, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm or via email at [email protected].  Emails can be sent 24/7 and will be responded to the same day or next day.   MHAW plans to expand those hours into the evening and weekend in the coming weeks.   Additional COVID-19-related resources can be found on the Mental Health Helpline webpage .

In addition to the Mental Health Helpline, MHAW has expanded the hours for its Peer Support Line and online Peer Support Groups.  These services are staffed by trained and experienced Certified Peer Specialists who have their own lived experience with emotional distress.  This telephone and online support will maximize access to those served and help to minimize the potential negative effects of social isolation during this challenging time.

APRIL HEALTH AND WELLNESS OBSERVANCES

April provides several opportunities to promote health and wellness awareness. Listed below are several resources to help community leaders and healthcare providers start planning ways to communicate, educate and involve the community they serve.  If you would like to promote special events in recognition of any of these observances on our Community Bulletin Board, submit them here .

ALCOHOL AWARENESS MONTH
Alcohol Awareness Month is a public health program organized by the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence as a way of increasing outreach and education regarding the dangers of alcoholism and issues related to alcohol. It has become a national movement to draw more attention to the causes and effects of alcoholism, as well as how to help families and communities deal with drinking problems. Click on the below topics for helpful information and resources to help promote awareness.
NATIONAL MINORITY HEALTH MONTH
With Americans advised to stay in and around their homes this National Minority Health Month (April), the Office of Minority Health (OMH) at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services will feature the theme Active & Healthy and focus on safe ways all communities can stay physically active and advance mental and emotional wellness.  To learn more, click here.

Join OMH throughout April as they encourage everyone to stay active and support physical, mental and emotional wellness.  This year, everyone is invited to join #ActiveandHealthy, a national social media campaign that will focus on ways we can stay active and healthy in and around the house while following the social distancing guidelines to stop the spread of COVID-19.  Daily themes will highlight steps people can take in and around the home to maintain and sustain an active and healthy lifestyle while reducing stress and anxiety.

Spread the word virtually by downloading the  National Minority Health Month Toolkit full of resources, sample social media messages and downloadable graphics.   Sign up for email updates on OMH's website to learn more about National Minority Health Month, and follow them on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.
