26 th Annual Secondary School Art/Design Competition

In it's 26th year, the Secondary School Art/Design Competition opened up in the Art Center Gallery in Miriam Hall on January 19, 2020.

For the first time, an Online/Digital component was included in this competition. Five expert panelists selected works of exceptional achievement, and awards were given to the top three works in each of five categories: Drawing, Digital Design, Painting, Photography, and Sculpture. Awards in the Online/Digital Exhibit were in Drawing, Mixed Media, Photo, and Video.

This year's exhibit represented the work of students from 18 different high schools and included 99 physical works and 19 Online/Digital works.

From Siding to Soffits: Building a Community, One House at a Time

The sounds of hammering and sawing and drilling mean that two families are just that much closer to moving into their new homes.

Six Anna Maria students, led by Melissa LaNeve, Director of Campus Ministry, spent winter break working with Habitat for Humanity of Salem County, New Jersey. The group joined the crews putting up two houses there, and occasionally worked alongside one of the owners as well as the young son of another homeowner.

The student volunteers - seniors Austin Thomas and Jessica Barbera, juniors Meaghan Walsh and Joshua Wozniak, sophomore Keannah Dunsmore, and freshman Kayla Beer - put up siding, soffits, and fascia, and some even worked on scaffolding to reach the high peaks.

Student leaders Jessica and Joshua chose AMC's mission and values as the theme for the week. The group tried to represent a different value each day, then discussed it in the evening, as they reflected on what they'd accomplished.

"I volunteered because I think it's important to give back to the community by serving others." says Austin Thomas. "This was my first service trip and it was so much more fun that I thought it could be. I met some wonderful people, learned a lot of new skills, and had some amazing experiences. We had the opportunity to work with one of the homeowners, and it was very humbling. I wish I hadn't waited so long to do this."
