Oceanographer Robert Ballard Speaks at Southern Miss
Space
Robert Ballard, the oceanographer most noted for discovering the RMS Titanic, was recently a guest presenter at the University Forum. Ballard's presentation, "Finding the Titanic and Other Tales of the Sea"
chronicled
the discovery of the ill-fated vessel in 1985. The talk also covered notable underwater discoveries such as the wreck of the Lusitania, the Bismark (a German battleship) and the USS Yorktown, an aircraft carrier that sank at the Battle of Midway. Ballard was also instrumental in the discovery of hydro thermal vents in the Galapagos Rift and Ballard was awarded the National Humanities Medal by President George H.W. Bush in 2003.
"Bob Ballard is a modern-day adventurer, an undersea Indiana Jones, whose explorations remind us that we should not ignore the part of history that lies at the bottom of the ocean," said Dr. Andrew Haley, director of University Forum. "His discovery of the remains of the Titanic forced us to grapple with the limits of technology, even as it demonstrated the power of science, math, and engineering to overcome even the most daunting hurdles."
