Dear Friend,

We hope this finds you safe and healthy, in all ways.

As a vital part of this community for the last 30 years, we are committed to standing with our partners, neighbors and friends through this crisis. The Dreamer Scholars, their families, our staff and volunteers give us hope that our bonds will be stronger on the other side. We remain committed to serving Dreamer Scholars and their families despite the challenges to connecting in person. We continue to assess individual needs and are working through alternative methods of supporting students and their families.

We are grateful that in the midst of this crisis, our community is coming together to support one another in powerful ways, and we want to take a moment to share with you some of the beautiful stories that reflect our unbreakable bonds.

Since early 2018, Donette has been a mentor to Jolie, a fourth grader in the La Vista Class at Alicia Sanchez International Elementary School. Jolie and Donette both love cooking and made time last week to take a virtual cooking class together, making spaghetti and brownies for their families.

“It was a fun and nice way to connect since we are unable to see each other in person,” Donette shared with us. Thank you to all the mentors finding ways to connect with their mentees virtually!

Despite finding creative ways to connect with students and conduct programming virtually, Dreamer Scholars are still facing serious challenges . Several Dreamer Scholar alumni in college currently lack the technology needed to complete their work and follow along with virtual classes at home. Thankfully, with the help of Boulder Housing Partners, Keelin, our Director of College and Career, secured loaned Chromebooks to temporarily meet the needs of these post-secondary Dreamer Scholar alums.
Like many of us, Dreamer Scholar families are having hard conversations and crunching the numbers at the kitchen table. Carlos Lerma, Director of Parent Partnerships, has been surveying families and nearly half of those who responded said their biggest challenges right now are making rent and putting food on the table. We have created a comprehensive resource list for food, rent, and other assistance available through the county and basic needs organizations, and our staff are working daily to connect families to these services.

In addition, we know that many of the students we serve are especially vulnerable to learning loss as they lack access to the technology needed to productively engage in online learning. To that end, we are working to form an emergency grant program to help with those home-based learning needs. Please continue to read these weekly emails to get updates on how you can get involved.

Since “I Have A Dream” was founded 30 years ago, we’ve operated from the perspective that we are all in this together. This current crisis highlights this fact and we are grateful that you are in this with us. Your ongoing support is vital to ensuring our work continues through this crisis and in the decades ahead.
With gratitude,
Garett Brownlee Plantz
Interim Executive Director
Querido amigo,

Garett Brownlee Plantz
