AAVLD President's Message
|
Dear Fellow AAVLD members,
The year 2020 brings us both challenges and opportunities. The AAVLD Executive Board just met in Las Vegas to deliberate on important issues impacting animal health and our laboratories. It was exciting to learn that different AAVLD regions are busy planning the spring get togethers to bolster regional cooperation among laboratories. Please contact your AAVLD regional representative to learn about any activities that are being planned in your region.

Our focus at AAVLD remains strengthening all veterinary diagnostic labs and improving laboratory infrastructure, so labs can diagnose and detect diseases early, before they become difficult to eradicate. The Executive team working with the Government Relations committee is reaching out to the Congress, USDA and our Ag partners making sure we highlight the benefits of providing additional infrastructure support, while still funding innovative projects that can help the whole network. We are also trying to emphasize that the NAHLN network needs total funding of $30M a year to help build a robust laboratory network.
The emergence of novel coronavirus (2019-nCov) from animals, and that has now primarily established as a human infection remains a cause of concern for all diagnosticians. Its rapid spread highlights the importance of deployment of rapid diagnostic tests for control in face of an outbreak. Our readiness to fight such diseases whether its African Swine fever or Bird Flu must be maintained and tested periodically, if we are to successfully respond to such threats.
Within each laboratory, the diagnosticians, professionals, our technical and support staff (that is all you together) are the real heroes in our fight against diseases and pathogens. The AAVLD organization provides us excellent opportunity to share knowledge and ideas and allows us to move in one direction collectively.
Let’s keep the spirit of sharing and volunteering to keep this organization growing!!!

How to submit
: The competition is open to individual members and to Laboratories. The goal is to grow our organization’s membership through the recruitment of new members and bringing back previous members whose membership has lapsed by two or more years. AAVLD membership is open to any individual interested in the disciplines and activities of veterinary diagnostic laboratories. Membership terms are by calendar year (January-December) and membership dues are payable by November 15th of the preceding year (to ensure inclusion in the annual membership directory, eligibility for committee involvement, and receipt of all six issues of the JVDI). Note: In order to receive a discounted rate for the Annual Meeting registration, you are required to be a current AAVLD Member.

Frequently Asked Questions Regarding AAVLD Membership:
When are my dues due?
They are due November 15 for the next calendar year. Many members pay for the next year when they register for the annual meeting. Lead time is needed to finalize committee appointments for the new year.
Does it matter who pays for my dues?
No. Your status will be the same with their resepective privileges whether you pay, your employer pays, or your Uncle Vinny.
Are Lab Accreditation dues different than Institutional/Agency membership dues?
Yes
- Laboratory Accreditation dues are different and separate and are related to accreditation only and go to fund the accreditation program only.
- Whether accredited or not, a Laboratory (or Institution/Agency) may additionally become an Institutional/Agency Member. By doing so they are supporting the broad mission of the AAVLD and these funds go to support CE and training and all other activities of the AAVLD. Institutional/Agency Members are highly valued members and are demonstrating leadership and belief in our organizational purpose.
Do Institutional/Agency Member labs have to pay for their employees individual dues?
No. A laboratory, institution, agency or department can become a member under this category even without signing up their employees. They are simply supporting the AAVLD mission with their dues payment. Some states are not allowed to pay for employee dues; and some states have budgetary restrictions.

JVDI in Focus
Clostridial disease focus issue
We are eagerly anticipating the publication of our focus issue on Clostridial Diseases in the March 2020 JVDI, with guest editors Francisco A. Uzal, Mauricio A. Navarro, and Jesse M. Hostetter.
Key features of the clostridia focus issue:
- 16 timely articles, including reviews of major clostridial agents and diseases: gas gangrene, tetanus, clostridial hepatitis, Clostridium perfringens type C enteritis in pigs, Clostridium (Clostridioides) difficile, Clostridium (Paeniclostridium) sordellii in horses, NetF toxin, and much more!
- Clostridial diseases are still alive and well, and are among the main causes of disease, mortality, and loss of production in many animal species worldwide.
- Most clostridia are ubiquitous in the environment, and eradication of these microorganisms is virtually impossible.
- Vaccines and treatment are not yet readily available for some clostridial diseases.
- The diagnosis of several of these diseases remains challenging. Diagnosis is complicated because several clostridia are found in tissues and body fluids of clinically healthy animals, and, as well, clostridia can invade immediately after, or shortly before, death. Diagnosticians must rely on diagnostic criteria other than the simple detection of a given microorganism to establish a diagnosis of most clostridial diseases.
We hope that the articles presented in this focus issue will help dispel some of the confusion regarding some of the most prevalent clostridial diseases, their etiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, and prevention.
