As we kick into gear for the Fall 2019 semester, check out the various opportunities to get involved with the school. Student groups Undergraduate Theatre Artists Society (UTAS) and Delta Chi Xi (DCX) Honorary Dance Fraternity are looking for new members, so check out the application info below. Also, NextNOW Fest takes place at The Clarice next weekend—don't miss this fun opportunity to experience a convergence of arts and community right here in our own building!
This issue's feature story highlights Professor Dan Conway's recent trip to the 2019 Prague Quadrennial, where he represented the United States with his set design for Chicago Shakespeare Theatre's "Macbeth." Check out the full story below.

TDPS are automatically eligible to become members of the Undergraduate Theatre Artists Society (UTAS).
UTAS is a student organization which focuses on advocating for and creating opportunities for students who are heavily involved in performing arts through TDPS. To be registered as a member of UTAS, please do the following:

Join DCX Honorary Dance Fraternity!
|
|
Delta Chi Xi (DCX) is an honorary dance fraternity that exists to serve the UMD dance community.
They put on many events every semester such as free dance classes of all styles and levels, the New Dances performance, and Late Night Arts Explosion in the spring. Joining DCX is a great way to gain leadership and professional skills as well as get involved with the UMD dance community through service and a common love of dance.

Clarice Family Comps and Free Student tickets
|
|
TDPS students, faculty, and staff are eligible for Clarice Family comps!
For performances at The Clarice:
- Clarice Family Comps are available on the first day of classes for ALL performances in the upcoming semester.
- Monday, August 26 for performances through January 31, 2020
- Monday, January 27 for performances through May 9, 2020
- Clarice Family Faculty and staff may get 2 (two) comp tickets
- Clarice Family Students may get 2 (two) comp tickets (one for being a UMD student and one for being part of the Clarice Fam)
For performances at MilkBoy ArtHouse:
- Clarice Family Comps for faculty and staff are available the day before the event, as long as tickets remain for purchase.
- If a performance is sold out, Clarice Family members are welcome to put their names on the waitlist for their comp ticket.
- Faculty and staff are permitted 1 (one) comp ticket per event. Additional tickets may be purchased with the $5 off faculty/staff discount.
- Students are permitted 1 (one) comp ticket as part of the Free UMD Student Tickets program, which become available on the first day of classes.
- There are no additional comp tickets for Clarice Family students.
For all Clarice Family comp tickets:
If you have reserved a ticket that you cannot use, PLEASE contact the Guest Experience team (
mod-theclarice@umd.edu
) - they will return your ticket so that someone else can fill your seat.

In addition, all students at the University of Maryland, College Park receive
one free ticket per event.

Professor Daniel Conway at the ‘Olympics’ of theatrical design
|
Dan Conway represented the United States as a featured set designer at the 2019 Prague Quadrennial this summer.
Established in 1967, the Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space (PQ) is considered to be the “Olympics” for designers in performance, scenography and theater architecture. Taking place every four years, the PQ features exhibitions, festivals and programs that bring international designers and artists together to experiment, share ideas and network. Conway traveled to Prague this summer to represent the University of Maryland in the North American exhibition, joining designers and performance artists from 79 countries.

- Marketing and communications coordinator Kate Spanos (Ph.D. ‘16) published an article stemming from her dissertation research: “Locating Montserrat Between the Black and Green” in the August 2019 issue of the Journal for Irish Migration Studies in Latin America.
- Visiting Assistant Professor Andrew Cissna is currently the lighting designer for Love Sick, a new musical at Theatre J, and Fences at Ford’s.

nternational Program for Creative Collaboration and Research (IPCCR)
grant funding.
These grants are available to TDPS faculty, graduate students, and staff for projects to be undertaken between October 15, 2019 and June 15, 2020.

The IPCCR committee will be doing a workshop for anyone interested in applying on Wednesday, September 18 from 4:00-4:50pm in CSPAC 1815.

- NEW The Puppet Co. Playhouse at Glen Echo Park is looking to fill a part-time House Management position at their theatre. They are a small, professional non-profit children’s theatre that produces original retellings of classic stories using puppetry. See the attached flyer for more details.
- NEW The REACH opening festival at the Kennedy Center opens this month! Check out their website for opportunities to work with amazing guest artists in theatre and dance.This month is Theatre Week, sponsored by theatreWashington and TodayTix. This is a great way to see some discounted shows around town. More information here.
- NEW Apply for the Fall 2019 Foxworth Do Good/ARH-U Ready Unpaid Internship Scholarships. Awards range from $250 to $1000. Eligibility requirements include: (1) must be enrolled in an internship course, (2) must complete a minimum of 135 hours at the site during the semester, (3) internship must be unpaid/not offer compensation, and (4) if the organization is a for-profit organization, it must have approximately 50 or fewer employees. - NEW Charm City Fringe is hiring for the following paid positions: Front of House Manager, Venue Manager, and Producer. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, but for best consideration, interested parties should apply ASAP. - NEW The Truman Scholarship program, which is the official federal memorial for President Harry S. Truman, recognizes juniors (third year students) with demonstrated abilities to contribute to the public good through outstanding leadership and service. Truman Scholars have outstanding leadership experience, a strong focus on public service goals and activities, and excellent academic performance. The Truman program provides a $30,000 grad study award, plus top-level internship opportunities, and participation in an unrivaled professional network of leaders and change-makers in public service. If you are interested, there will be info sessions at 2403 Marie Mount Hall on Wednesday, September 11 at 12pm and 4pm and on Thursday, September 12 at 12pm and 4pm. - Folger Shakespeare Library is seeking Production Stage Managers for its 2019/20 season production of The Merry Wives of Windsor, by William Shakespeare, directed by Aaron Posner. Rehearsals begin Monday, December 16, 2019, and the production closes Sunday, March 1, 2020. This is a weekly contract position that begins with first rehearsal. Folger Theatre’s performance schedule is an 8-show week. Must be a member in good standing of Actors’ Equity Association. Submit a cover letter and resume on their website.
- The Jung Society of Washington is hiring a part-time director of communications to handle publicity for their upcoming programs. Visit their website for more information.
