Why Attendance Matters
As we start the new school year, SUHSD would like to reinforce the importance of student attendance. A critical component of student academic success is physically being present at school and in the classroom. Chronic absenteeism , defined as missing 10% of school for any reason (excused and unexcused, including vacation time) is directly associated with lower student achievement and course performance. Even high performers are affected by absences; missing even five to seven days can significantly lower a student’s GPA.

Chronic absenteeism can be a signal that a student is struggling at home or within the community. It also can be an indicator that students have been exposed to trauma (higher Adverse Childhood Experiences, ACEs), or are finding the classroom experience irrelevant.
As SUHSD is actively engaged in addressing attendance barriers, we will need cooperation from every parent and community member. If your household is experiencing any difficulties or undergoing hardships, please feel free to access the additional resources below, or contact your student’s counselor or school’s Attendance Office / administration. We want you to know that our district is prepared to help and connect you to resources and services that will provide your student with the necessary supports to breakdown any and all attendance barriers.

Attendance matters for all, all day and every day . Chronic absenteeism can be solved with our community joining together to make it a priority.

Strengthening Two-Way Communication
In an effort to improve the stakeholder experience of our website, critical updates were made over the summer that improve the user experience.

The District sought out public opinion in an effort to make commonly accessed functionalities and information easier to find. The result of this upgrade is that the seq.org website better reflects community needs. Along with a mega-menu navigation system, there is improved readability, more relevant information, and an overall enhanced interface.

We recognize that information sharing is an on-going process, and welcome suggestions through the new Communications Division page, by selecting this link. The page provides the user wit h an avenue to connect with the District, provide feedback and outlines the efforts of the Communications Division.

As part of SUHSD's effort to further strengthen two-way communications, the District will start a series of community interest topics that allows for its various stakeholders to discuss and engage virtually in real-time. Stay tuned for more details in the coming month.
Parent Education Series Kicks Off Next Month
The Parent Education Series provides professional, high-quality education to parents, students, educators, and community members in Sequoia Union High School District.

Since 2006, the program has reached over 50,000 attendees on critical issues—e.g., mental health, substance use, social media—which impact the health and wellness of teens. Through premier presentations, films, and workshops, families acquire the knowledge, skills, and strategies they need to support student success and well-being.
