SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT AND REQUEST FOR TEACHERS:
Beginning in September, we have started a second Sunday School class for our children. This means that we are in need of additional teachers and helpers.  We now have a class for PreK-1st Grade and a class for 2nd-6th Grade . Ideally we would like teachers to serve several weeks in a row to allow for continuity and to provide the best for our children. Helpers can be that extra set of hands and eyes and could be part of a more rotational schedule.  If you would like to teach or be a helper, please contact Michele Gibbel or Diane Gibble. Thank you!

"Notes from the Console," Article 7, By Mike Frock
"What are all those little numbers?" Part 1-Introduction to the Basics

The next several articles will be devoted to addressing a question from Peggy Metzger who wants to know about the little numbers and letters that appear in the hymnal below the hymn name and after the tune name. So, if we look at #120 in the Brethren hymnal, we see "Holy, holy, holy!" (the hymn name), NICEA (the tune name), and "11 12.12 10". Very simply, those four numbers are the number of syllables in each phrase of text, i.e. the poetic meter of the text. The first phrase has 11 syllables, the second phrase has 12 syllables, the third phrase has 12 syllables, and the fourth phrase has 10 syllables. So the poetic meter of "Holy, holy, holy!" is 11 12.12 10, not to be confused with the musical meter, or time signature, of 4/4. These poetic meters are then collated in the Metrical Index, usually found in the back of a hymnal (page 893 in the Brethren hymnal). Not all hymnals list meters and/or have a Metrical Index, but I would say that it is more common to be included than excluded. Sometimes the Metrical Index is included as a supplement or part of a supplement. Most, if not all, of the hymnals issued by specific denominations include a Metrical Index. The hymnals where a Metrical Index is not included are generally either hymnals not associated with a specific denomination (i.e. someone quickly threw together a hymnal just to sell and did not put the time into compiling a Metrical Index), or hymnals that are mostly contemporary music (since a lot of contemporary music does not easily follow set poetic patterns).

If we look at #71 "Joyful, joyful, we adore thee," we see "87.87D". The designation "D" is an abbreviation for "Double" or "Doubled," and so 87.87D is simply shorthand for 87.87.87.87.  If we look at #143 "Amazing grace!," we see "CM." Some meters are used so frequently that those meters are given specific names. CM stands for Common Meter, and is shorthand for 86.86, SM stands for Short Meter (or rarely Simple Meter) and is shorthand for 66.86, LM stands for Long Meter and is shorthand for 88.88, CMD is Common Meter Doubled (86.86.86.86), SMD is Short Meter Doubled (66.86.66.86) and LMD is Long Meter Doubled (88.88.88.88).  Common Meter is sometimes rarely called Ballad Meter, as English poets frequently used to use 86.86 when writing ballads. These are the only abbreviations in the current Brethren hymnal, as well as any other current hymnal that I have seen. However, the black 1901 Brethren Hymnal lists HM for Hallelujah Meter (66.66.88), CHM for Common Hallelujah Meter (86.86.88), and CPM for Common Particular (or Peculiar) Meter (88.68.86). There also exists SHM for Short Hallelujah Meter (66.86.88), SPM for Short Particular (or Peculiar) Meter (66.86.68), and LPM for Long Particular (or Peculiar) Meter (88.88.88). While the numerical representations of these meters are still listed in the modern hymnals, these six shorthand notations of HM, CHM, SHM, CPM, SPM, and LPM have fallen into disuse. Tune in next week for Lesson 2 on the Metrical Index, but for the time being you can test your understanding of the above on Sunday when you inspect the poetic meters listed for the three service hymns: #8 "Brethren, we have met to worship," #119 "Praise God from whom," and #437 "Count well the cost."
