Arthur Stuart-Mentet Hutchinson was a British novelist and the editor of the London illustrated newspaper, The Daily Graphic. He wrote romance and family novels as well as short stories for publications such as The Sphere Magazine. His best-selling novel, If Winter Comes, was in many aspects ahead of its time, dealing with an unhappy marriage, eventual divorce, and an unwed mother who commits suicide.

2 volumes, 5-1/4 x 8 inches. Original dark green cloth professionally re-backed with original spine some time ago. Original tan endpapers in both volumes. Both volumes have  a gilt embossed illustration on front covers, which depicts a log cabin with campfire and 3 people. Both volumes are slightly cocked with the type on spine quite readable. Very good condition overall.

Decorated endpapers with overall spotting to front and back, portraying Acadians traveling from home -- endpapers bear  printed signature of A. A. Dixon. All twelve full page color plates and 40 small in-text colour Illustrations are charming and very attractive. Small B&W in-text illustrations also throughout the book. This MacDonald signed letter was a secretarial written letter, and it would  have been by [Sir] Joseph Pope MacDonald's private secretary from 1882 to 1891.
Royal Colonial Institute is now The Royal Commonwealth Society and was founded in 1868, as a non-political, learned organisation; a royal charter was granted in 1869, and a clubhouse opened in 1885. The Society's name slowly evolved: from The Colonial Society (1868-1869), to The Royal Colonial Society (1869-1870), to The Royal Colonial Institute (1870-1928), to The Royal Empire Society (1928-1958); The Royal Commonwealth Society was adopted in 1958....   Click for more information and photos;

Autograph letter signed. Two pages, 5 x 8 inches. Marked private. Dated Government House, Ottawa October 25th, 1876.
Attributed letter was sent to Frederick Young as it was with a collection of other letters addressed to him when obtained combined with the subject of "Imperial Federation" while not specifically stated is noted on the back panel of the letter.
Given the letter is marked 'Private' and in the content of the letter it states "Indeed the subject to which you refer is of so large a character" supports the Imperial Federation Topic. Frederick Young wrote a book in 1876 titled "Imperial federation of Great Britain and her colonies" clearly demonstrating a major interest and focus on this topic and similar timing to this letter to Dufferin in 1876...  Click for more information and photos;

Dated Ottawa 10th March 1888. To Sir Frederick Young, secretary of the Royal Colonial Institute. Offering congratulations on his recognition by the Queen and congratulations on being awarded a knighthood, and his work on unifying the Dominions. Fleming defacto indicates his full support for the British Empire, imperialism and uniting the Empire.

Sir Sandford Fleming, probably Canada's greatest engineer, was in charge of the construction of the Canadian Pacific railroad; he also was one of the leading figures in the construction of the first Pacific cable and strongly supported the movement toward the unification of time throughout the world...
